Aptiva - Using RAMDRIVE to make programs run faster

Applicable to: World-Wide

This article is intended for implementation on systems using 2MB or more of installed of memory. If you have a DOS program or game which you wish to run faster, you can create a RAMDRIVE and run the game from this drive. RAMDRIVE makes your computer think the extra memory you have is a disk drive. The program runs faster because it will be running in memory (RAM) instead of from the fixed disk.

Use the following procedure to create a RAMDRIVE:

1. Start Microsoft Works and choose "Open Existing File".

2. Type in C:\CONFIG.SYS as the name of the file to open. Press <ENTER> to open the file.

3. Add the following line to the file:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 512 /E

Insert the DEVICE=C:\DOS\RAMDRIVE line after the line DEVICE=C:\HIMEM.SYS.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 3.1, you may not wish to use the above procedure as Windows is a very "memory hungry" program and the above procedure would significantly decrease the amount of memory available for Windows. Decreasing the memory available for Windows will cause performance to be noticeably slower.

4. Save the file and restart the system for the changes to take effect.

After creating the RAMDRIVE, you can create a batch file to load games or programs into the RAMDRIVE. Use the following procedure:

1. Start Works, select "Create New File" and choose "New Word Processor".

2. Enter the following commands:

COPY C:\<directoryname>\*.* E: <press Enter>

E: <filename> <press Enter>

NOTE: <directoryname> is the name of the directory where the game or program is installed and <filename> is the name of the file which starts the program. DO NOT include the brackets, <..>, in the actual file.

3. Select "File", choose "Save As" and type in C:\ and a filename with a .BAT extension (i.e., C:\GAME.BAT). Make sure the file will be saved as a Text(DOS) file in Works for Windows or a Text file in DOS Works. This will save the batch file that loads the game into the RAMDRIVE in the root directory so you can start it from the Main folder of Your Software, or from the root directory using File Manager in Windows or DOS Shell.

4. Press [ENTER] to save the file. It is okay to save without formatting. After saving the file, close the file and exit the Works program. Now when you start the program or game from the Main Folder in YOUR SOFTWARE, using the batch file you created, it loads into the RAMDRIVE and runs faster than it would from the fixed disk. Be aware that when the system is powered Off, everything which is saved in the RAMDRIVE is lost.
