Aptiva - Configuration error messages after powering up

When a system is powered up, you may receive configuration error messages with a number, such as 161, 1162, or 1762. These messages will appear before you see the "Starting PC-DOS..." message, and they are an indication that the hardware checkout portion of the computer power-on sequence has detected a hardware incompatibility of some kind or some condition that is different since the last time the system was powered up.
These messages can stem from several sources, and the message on the screen will usually indicate that you should press F1 to correct the problem. Pressing F1 will cause the computer to go to the hardware configuration screen, where you will see the erroneous setting highlighted.
The most common source for these messages is that you have added new hardware to the system, such as more RAM, a second hard drive, or a new adapter card. In such cases, the highlighted line on the screen is only indicating that this entry has been changed. You should visually verify that the new setting is correct (it usually is), and press the Escape key and reply Yes to save the change. The system will then continue to boot up after that.
Another source for these error messages may be that a memory, cache, or adapter card hardware error has been detected, where a chip or adapter card has been installed incorrectly. This will most often be the case if you get the same error on the next power-on startup, and you'll need to examine the part that was just installed to be sure it is the correct part and is plugged in correctly. If it is an adapter card, then there may be a jumper on the card that needs to be set or reset to remove the conflict with other hardware.
In any case, the setting that the hardware configuration screen shows or highlights is the setting that it found to be changed while doing the power-on test. Accepting this new setting will usually cure the problem, but it may sometimes be different from what you expected.
For example, you may have installed a new hard drive and the setting indicates that the hard drive has less space shown for it. Checking and rechecking the hard drive jumpers and cabling can often fix this type of problem. On older PS/1 systems, there may be a limit on the size of the hard drive that can be added to the system, so you may need to get a drive of the proper size or use other means to get around the limitation. The Aptiva systems should not have such a limit, so the more likely error is that the hard drive may be cabled or jumpered incorrectly.
Similar problems can occur when replacing the internal modem. By plugging the new modem with the same address and IRQ configurations used for the original modem, a lot of these types of problems will disappear.
If you encounter configuration error messages during boot up, the most likely cause for the error is something that you've changed since the last power-on sequence. Recheck the work you have done, correcting it if necessary, so that the system can get through the power-on sequence without an error.
