Aptiva - How to configure a microphone with an Aptiva system

I. Connecting a microphone to an Aptiva
1. Locate the microphone. If the microphone did not come with the system, you will need to purchase a microphone with a 1/8th-inch stereo, phono connector.

2. Locate the "MIC" phono jack on the back of the Aptiva. ( On newer systems, the jack will be orange in color). On all other machines this is the jack closest to the edge of the computer, usually denoted by "MIC"

3. Plug the 1/8th-inch connector into the MIC jack

II. Configuring a microphone on an Aptiva

1. DOS/Windows 3.1 preloads.

I. Boot the system into Windows.

II. Double Click on the "Aptiva Entertainment " Icon.

III. Double Click on the Music Rack Icon.

IV. Adjust Volume until you get desired results.

2. PC DOS/Windows 3.1 OS/2 Select-a-system preloads.

I. DOS/Win 3.1.

1. Boot into Window 3.1

2. Double click on the "Aptiva Entertainment" Icon.

3. Double click on the "Music Center" Icon.

4. Click on the Audiostation button.

5. Make sure the audio mixer is showing on the screen. If it is not, click on the button directly beside the question mark at the center of the top of the window.

6. If you wish to use the microphone for recording, click on the box to the left of the word "Record".

Note: the button should turn red.

Now click on the button that says "MIC". the green light should illuminate when this is done correctly.

Make sure the "M" beneath the "Input" levers is black with grey background. If it is grey with a black background, the Input is muted.

Adjust the volume lever marked "Input" to desired level.

7. If you wish to play your voice through the speakers, click on the box to the left of the word "Playback". Click on the button that says "MIC", the green light should illuminate when this is done correctly.

Make sure the "M" beneath the "Input" levers is black with grey background. If it is grey with a black background, the Input is muted.

Adjust the volume levers marked "Input", and speak into the microphone until you get the desired results.

II. OS/2

1. Boot into OS/2.

2. Double click on the "Aptiva Entertainment" Icon.

3. Double click on the "Music Center" Icon.

4. Click on the "Audiostation" button.

5. Make sure the audio mixer is showing on the screen. If it is not, click on the button directly beside the question mark at the center of the top of the window.

6. If you wish to use the microphone for recording, click on the box to the left of the word "Record".

Note: the button should turn red.

Now click on the button that says "MIC". the green light should illuminate when this is done correctly.

3. Windows 95 preloads

I. 2134, 2144, 2168, & 2176 Series preloads

1. Boot into Windows 95.

2. To open the Audiostation, Click on "Start", "Programs", "Aptiva Entertainment", then "Music Center". Click on the "Audiostation" button.

3. Make sure the audio mixer is showing on the screen. If it is not, click on the button directly beside the question mark at the center of the top of the window.

4. If you wish to use the microphone for recording, click on the box to the left of the word "Record".

Note: the button should turn red.

Now click on the button that says "MIC". the green light should illuminate when this is done correctly. Adjust the volume lever marked "Input" to desired level.

5. If you wish to play your voice through the speakers, click on the box to the left of the word "Playback". Click on the button that says "MIC", the green light should illuminate when this is done correctly. Note: Make sure the "M" beneath the "Input" levers is black with grey background. If it is grey with a black background, the Input is mute.

Some systems have a light instead of an "M" beneath the volume control levers. If the light is on, the MIC is muted, if it is off the MIC is enabled.

Adjust the volume levers marked "Input", and speak into the microphone until you get the desired results.

II. 2159 Series preloads

1. Boot into Windows 95.

2. To open the Audiostation, Click on "Start", "Programs", "Aptiva Entertainment", "Audiostation", then "Audio Mixer".

3. There will be a box labeled "Record" to the right of the volume control levers.

4. Click on the box to the left of the word "MIC" in the "Record" box. The box will turn red.

5. Locate the picture of a microphone.

6. Make sure the microphone is not muted. i.e. if the triangle in the box beneath the audio levers is illuminated, the microphone is muted.

7. Adjust the volume levers above the photo of the MIC to desired levels.

III. 2161, 2162, 2140, and 2142 Series preloads

1. Boot into Windows 95.

2. To open the Audiostation, Click on "Start", "Programs", "Aptiva Entertainment", "Audiostation", then "Audio Mixer".

3. If you wish to use the microphone for recording, click on the box to the left of the word "Record".

Note: the button should turn light blue.

4. Make sure the red light next to the photo of the microphone is off. If the light is on the microphone is muted .

5. Adjust the volume levers above the photo of the MIC to desired levels.

6. If you wish to play your voice through the speakers, click on the box to the left of the word "Playback"

The box will turn light blue.

Note: If the light is on, the MIC is muted, if it is off the MIC is enabled. If you wish to speak through the speakers make sure the microphone is not muted.

Adjust the volume levers marked "Input", and speak into the microphone until you get the desired results.

IV. 2136, 2137, and 2138 Series preloads

1. Boot into Windows 95.

2. To enter Windows' volume control, Click on "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Multimedia", then "Volume Control".

3. Once in the Volume control settings, click on the word "Options" in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

4. Click on the word "Properties".

5. Once in Properties, Click on the radio button to the left of "Recording".

6. Using the scroll-bar on the right, scroll down and make sure there is a check in the box to the left of "MIC".

7. Click "OK".

8. Now you are in the "Master Record" volume control window. Adjust the volume lever marked "MIC" and/or the lever marked "Master" until you get the desired results.

9. If you wish to play your voice through the speakers, click on the word "Options" in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

10. Click on "Properties".

11. Click on the radio button to the left of the word "Playback".

12. Using the scroll-bar on the right, scroll down and make sure there is a check in the box to the left of "MIC".

13. Click "OK".

14. Now you are in the "Master Out" volume control window. Make sure there is NOT a check in the mute box beneath the "MIC" volume levers.

15. Adjust the volume lever marked "MIC" and/or the lever marked "Master" until you get the desired results.
