Aptiva - 2168 Voice Type Dictation does not display text

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
I cannot see any text in the Voice Type Dictation window while dictating. How can I correct this?

Answer:
Normally as one uses the dictation window, the text shows as one speaks. The background of the dictation window is a pale
yellow. If the dictation window's background becomes white and the text stops appearing, the following procedure will help
correct the problem. Note: The dictation engine still works, as it is possible to copy and paste from the dictation window into
another editor, with the words showing up clearly in the other editor.
Requirements:
- 3 Recovery diskettes
- Aptiva MultiMedia Exploration CD

Backup the Enrollment as a precaution:

1. Double-click on the "ENROLLMENT" icon in the Voice Type Dictation window.
2. Click on "EXISTING USER" and select the user name in the top panel.
3. Select "BACKUP" on the right hand side.
4. Follow the prompts until the backup is complete.
5. Shutdown OS/2 Warp.

Correct the problem:

6. Place Recovery diskette #1 in drive A and reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
7. When prompted replace Recovery diskette #1 with #2.
8. At the Recovery Menu choose Option 6 and press "ENTER" twice to get to an A:\> prompt.
9. Type C: and press "ENTER".
10. Type CD\SPCH_RUN and press "ENTER".
11. Type REN WW.INI WW.BAK and press "ENTER".
12. Place the Aptiva MultiMedia Exploration CD in the CD-ROM drive. Type D: and press "ENTER".
13. After the CD light has gone out type CD\RECOVERY and press "ENTER".
14. Type UNZIP SYSTEM.ZIP SPCH_RUN\WW.INI -D C:\ and press "ENTER".
15. Remove the CD and diskette from drive D and A respectively and reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
16. Back in OS/2, click on the "DICTATION WINDOW" icon, located in the Voice Dictation group icon on the desktop.
17. The Voice Type tutorial starts. Click on "QUIT".
18. The following dictation error message will occur:
"Voice Type enrollment must be completed before starting dictation."
Select "USER SETTINGS" and select the current user id.
19. This will bring up the program settings for Dictation window, with the User tab on top. In the "NAME (User ID):" field, it
will say "SPEAKER INDEPENDENT". Click on the list drop box on the right side of this field, and select your user
name.
20. Click on "APPLY" at the bottom of the "PROGRAM SETTING BOX".
21. Close down the "PROGRAM SETTINGS" window, and the "WHAT CAN I SAY" window. The Dictation window will now
have its proper yellow background and as you start to dictate, the text will once again be displayed as spoken.
