Aptiva - CPBACKUP diskette backup speed

Applicable to: United States

During the initial configuration phase of CPBACKUP (Central Point Backup), a backup confidence test is performed to determine the optimum speed that can be used when backing up files to a diskette drive. This test can also be done later by selecting Configure from the top menu bar, selecting Backup Speed from the drop-down menu, and then selecting the speed desired. Click on the Test button, and the backup program will test whether that speed is usable.

Normally, the backup program will select the best speed to use for backup. You can always select a lower speed, but never select a higher speed without running the test. The purpose of the speed test is to verify that the backup program can safely and accurately place files on the disk so that they can be retrieved correctly at a later time.

It is always a good idea to use that same speed when restoring files as well. In most cases, once a backup speed is selected, it will not be changed again. However, if you were experimenting with other speeds or a different drive, and then returned to select the original drive, its backup speed may not be the same as you had originally set. It is also possible that you may have backed up some data files on another system with CPBACKUP and now wish to restore them on your own system. On that other system, a different speed may have been used for the backup, so you should check to be sure that you are using the same speed for the restore phase.

If the speed used for the restore is not the same as the speed used for the backup, you may encounter problems of various kinds. The most typical will be the failure to restore certain files or messages about missing directories or general disk failure messages. In such cases, you may be able to correct these problems by selecting a different speed (via Configure) for the restore phase, preferably using the same speed used for the original backup if that is known. Otherwise, you may have to experiment with different speeds.

Note that files backed up by the DOS BACKUP command or by any other backup software other than CPBACKUP will not be restored by CPBACKUP, regardless of the speed used to backup the files.
