Servers - IBM hardware requirements for a Windows NT cluster
Applicable to: United Kingdom
A cluster solution, as defined by MSCS (MicroSoft Enterprise Clustering Server), requires two servers and a shared External Storage Enclosure. As the main requirement for a æclusterÆ is to provide a High Availability solution, it is recommended that the hardware components used are of the highest quality and feature redundancy wherever possible. The IBM recommended hardware for a high end cluster is:
1. Netfinity 7000 Server
IBMÆs high end Intel based server, featuring redundant disks/power supply/fans with predictive failure analysis, based on a
4-way Pentium Pro design.
2. Netfinity EXP-10
IBMÆs high end SCSI disk expansion enclosure featuring multiple power supplies, hot swap disks and over 180GB capacity using 18GB hot swap disks.
3. Netfinity Rack
A complete cluster, together with dual UPSÆs, can be installed and managed in a single IBM Netfinity Rack.
The configuration table below contains the following MSCS configuration:
IBM Netfinity 7000 Servers
- Dual Pentium Pro Processors and 256MB memory
- 100/10 PCI Ethernet
- 100/10 PCI Ethernet for æheartbeatÆ monitoring
- ServeRAID II SCSI Adapter
- Internally mirrored 4.5GB disk for the NOS
- Redundant Power
IBM Netfinity EXP-10
- Internally mirrored 4.5GB disk for Quorum logs
- 7x4.5GB RAID 5 disk for data/applications including a hot spare
- SCSI cables
IBM Netfinity Rack
- Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor and Switch
- 2 APC UPS
- Accessories

Detailed hardware and software instructions for setting up MSCS on the IBM Servers are contained in the various manuals supplied with the hardware and software. In addition, the IBM Redbook ôClustering and High Availability Guide for IBM Netfinity and IBM PC Serversö (SG24-4858) contains practical information in designing and setting up Clusters under Microsoft Windows NT, Novell Netware and IBM Warp Server.
