Aptiva - Windows 95 has disabled Direct Disk Access error message

Applicable to: World-Wide

If you see this error message, you may have filled your hard drive with files, have a mistake in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or compressed your hard drive.

To see if you have filled your hard drive up, do the following:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. When you see Starting Windows 95 in the upper left hand corner of the screen hit the F8 key.
3. At the Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu select option number 7. This is the 'Safe Mode Command Prompt Only'.
4. Type in DIR and hit ENTER.
5. If there are zero bytes free, the hard drive has been filled. You will need to erase un-needed files on your hard drive, or move them to another logical or physical partition.

NOTE: You may wish to use the DELTREE command to erase entire sub-directories. Time can be saved by using the powerful DELTREE command.
So, after booting to "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" do the following:
Type DELTREE _PS1SAVE.DAT and answer yes when prompted for confirmation.
To prevent the direct disk access problem from recurring, you can move the Windows 95 swap file to the D: drive (provided that the customer has a multi-partitioned drive OR two hard drives, --- as all Sxx and Cxx models do). To do this you:
* Right-click on My Computer
* Click on "Properties"
* Click on "Performance"
* Click on "Virtual Memory"
* Click on "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings"
* Click on the down arrow in the hard disk selection
* Change the drive to D:\

If this fails, check the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. When you see Starting Windows 95 in the upper left hand corner of the screen hit the F8 key.
3. At the Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu select option number 7. This is the 'Safe Mode Command Prompt Only'.
4. At the C: prompt type EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
5. Make sure the following lines are listed:
echo y | lock c: > nul
c:\ibmtools\ibmpfile.exe
unlock c:
6. If the lines are not present, you will need to add them.

If you learn that the drive has been compressed, you will need to do the following:

1. Verify the letter of the compressed drive (as default Windows 95 sets it to H).
5. Make sure the following lines are listed:
echo y | lock h: > nul
c:\ibmtools\ibmpfile.exe
unlock h:
6. If the lines are not present, you will need to add them.

NOTE: The " | " symbol is above the " \ " (backslash) key on the keyboard. To get this symbol, hold down the shift key and press the " \ " key.

NOTE: Make sure the LOCK and UNLOCK commands for the C drive are left intact or added if missing.
