TP General - How to check PC Cards and cables for damage

Applicable to: World-Wide

How to check PCMCIA modem card/cable for damage and secure connection.

Damage:
1. Are there any obvious signs of damage to card: (If yes to any of these the card could be defective.)
- Any pins bent on both ends of modem?
- Card physically dented or bent?
- Any sign of discoloration from extreme heat?

2. Are there any obvious signs of damage to cable: (If yes to any of these the cable could be defective.)
- Is cable broken, chaffed, or frayed?
- Are the pins on the card end bent or damaged?
- Is the RJ-11 (wall plug) connect damaged?

Secure:
Does the card?
1. Slide in/out of socket freely?
2. Does it mate properly with the PCMCIA socket in the system? (Card should remain in socket until the button is pressed to eject it.)

Does the cable?
1. Does cable connect properly to the card?
2. Does the cable plug properly into the wall outlet, doesn't wiggle or fall out if gently pulled. (Must use the tab to release the plug.)
