Applicable to: World-Wide

Important
Your SmartCard Security Kit is a very complex combination of technologies, which will impact the operating system, BIOS, and PCMCIA drivers on your notebook system. Therefore, it is extremely important that you follow these installation instructions closely, and in the described order, or you might have difficulty with the installation process.

Smart Card Security Kit Contents
The SmartCard Security Kit package includes the following items:

  1. PCMCIA Smart Card Reader: This PC Card provides the interface to your notebook computer, which allows the computer to read from and write to the Smart Card.
  2. Smart Card: This is your key to your notebook system; it contains the personal codes that are required for the security applications.
  3. Luggage Tag (optional): This blue-and-white slotted card can be attached to your computer carrying case to deter thieves.
  4. CD: This contains Security Application Software and Manuals that fully describe the applications.
  5. Order Form: You can use this form to order additional Smart Cards.

Documentation Overview
The SmartCard Security Kit option comes with a Quick Reference Manual and this Read First supplement. The Quick Reference Manual contains supplemental information for using the option after installation. The Read First supplement describes installation and uninstallation of the IBM SmartCard Security Kit hardware and software for Microsoft Windows 95 and 98 in a condensed format. The software CD also contains an Administrator Manual (Admin.pdf) and a User Manual (User.pdf) that you can view or print. You must have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer system in order to read the manuals. If you need it, you can click the Additional Programs button at the bottom of the Installation Menu to install the Acrobat reader. To open one of the online manuals, double-click the Manuals folder on the CD; then double-click on a file name.

Preparing for Installation
Before you begin installation, note the following:

Additionally...
Various unknown and sporadic problems can occur during and after installation of the smart card software; therefore, it is imperative that you update your system with the latest BIOS and device drivers before attempting to install any of the Smart Card software. For example the IBM Thinkpad 760 will not load the Smart Card device driver properly unless the latest 760 PCMCIA driver is download from the Thinkpad web site. In most cases where problems arise, the computer system was manufactured before there was support for devices like Smart Cards. Refer to your system's support organization to obtain the latest updates for your system. IBM Thinkpad customers can logon to the following site to obtain updates:
