DATA SECURITY CHARACTERISTICS
_____________________________
Security and auditability features of these servers are:
o Power-on and privileged access password functions provide controls of who has access to the data and server setup program on the server.
o A set keyboard password is used to lock the keyboard without turning off the system.
o A set unattended Start Mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive.
o A mechanical lock allows the user to lock the system cover to prevent unauthorized personnel access to diskette drives or removable media.
o Selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.
o Tie-down capability is achieved by utilizing a common U bolt attached to the back frame.
o Operation without a keyboard and display are supported once the server is configured with the appropriate network operating system. This minimizes the risk of unauthorized people tampering with the system software and configuration.
o A PC Server 325 Security Cover Kit and C2 Cable Option is also available that can detect tampering or removal of the server covers. This option, when enabled, can also alert the system administrator once this detection occurs.
Limitations:
Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. PC Server 325 models using the integrated UltraSCSI-2 Fast/Wide Controller are in conformance with this standard and have an external port.
PC Server 325 systems with these controllers or adapters also conform with ANSI SCSI-2 and work with SCSI-2 fast or fast/wide devices. It is a customer's responsibility to ensure that the server is secure, or has a security cover, to prevent sensitive data from being removed via external SCSI ports.
o The PC Server 325 Security Cable Kit, the PC Server 32 Security Cover and the PC Server Advanced Systems Management Adapter are available to upgrade PC Server 325 systems to higher levels of security.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Your IBM marketing representative can also be contacted for a complete listing of these network operating systems. The Sales Manual will be updated by product general availability with a complete list of supported software and certifications where appropriate.
COMPATIBILITY:
The PC Server 325 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PC Server 325 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under PC DOS and OS/2 on PC Servers; however, due to the higher speed of the processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification.
To view detailed information on the Internet about IBM and non-IBM devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with PC Servers, enter:
http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/compat/
Also, customers can contact their IBM representative, Authorized Remarketer, or IBM PC HelpWare or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for IBM PC Servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.
LIMITATIONS:
o PC Server 325 supports 512MB of EDO memory by using a various combinations of 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, or 256MB DIMMs. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access (DMA). All supported memory DIMMs can be installed in any combination. (Refer to the Compatiblity Section of PC Server Web page or the IBM Sales Manual, or contact your IBM reseller or marketing representative, for supported EDO DIMM memory options.)
o PC Server 325 models contain six total card slots comprised of four PCI card slots and two PCI/ISA combination slots. The top two PCI slots and
the bottom PCI slot are limited to short PCI cards.
o Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache sizes is not supported.
o Because these systems are designed as industry standard servers using an industry standard floppy diskette drive interface, the location of the
media eject button on the industry standard diskette drive and the lack of support for an electronic eject 2.88MB diskette drive option may be a
limitation for customers with certain disabilities.
o PC Server 325 systems contain a 7880 UltraSCSI Fast/Wide PCI controller that has two 68-pin SCSI connectors. Up to 15 SCSI-2 devices can be attached and supported from one connector; however, if any internal SCSI devices are installed to the internal connector, only one SCSI device can be supported from the external connector.
o When using UltraSCSI mode with the integrated UltraSCSI controller, refer to the ANSI SCSI-3 FAST-20 document for cable lengths and other technical requirements to determine if the configuration can be supported. Information on this subject can also be found in the PC Server 325 System Library.
o Customers should use the version of ServerGuide that ships with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.
Refer to the SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations.
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:
The PC Server 325 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the system.
CONFIGURATION INFORMATION:
PC SERVER 325 TOWER MODELS
The tower models of the PC Server 325 are cabled internally with a seven-drop, 16-bit wide SCSI cable. One end of this cable is attached to the
internal 16-bit connector of the 7880 UltraSCSI F/W controller. On open bay models the first drop of the seven-drop cable is attached to the standard CD-ROM through a 68- to 50-pin converter. When installing a SCSI-2 F/W hard drive, it should be installed in the lowest 3.5-inch bay and connected to the last drop on the SCSI cable to allow proper termination for the SCSI bus. In the standard drive model, the 4.51GB Wide Ultra SCSI hard disk drive and CD-ROM are preconfigured in this same manner. If connecting narrow devices to this cable, additional 68- to 50-pin SCSI converters (32G3925) must be ordered.
An external SCSI device can be attached to the PC Server 325 by connecting the 16-bit SCSI cable, that is pre-mounted to an external SCSI connector on the back panel, to the integrated SCSI controller.
PC SERVER 325 RACK INSTALLATIONS
PC Server 325 tower models are supported in the IBM Netfinity Rack. When installing the PC Server 325 in these rack enclosures, a PC Server Rack Series 300 Mounting Plate (94G4996) must be ordered. Refer to Hardware Announcement 197-xxx (RFA29081), dated September 23, 1997, for additional information about rack installations of PC Servers.
PC SERVER 325 RACK MODEL
The PC Server 325 rack model is an open bay model that is cabled internally the same as the tower model previously described. The rack model is designed to be installed in an industry standard, 19-inch rack cabinet such as the IBM Netfinity Rack. The cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow.
Rack Requirements:
Height is 5u (1 u = 1.75 in) |
222.25 mm (8.75 in) |
Depth |
711.2 mm (28 in) |
Rack rail to front door clearance |

The 10/100Mbps, full duplex, Ethernet PCI controller, standard with PC Server 325, is connected directly to a RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector provides a 10BaseT or 100Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the 100/10 controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.
There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.
INSTALLABILITY:
The PC Server 325 models require at about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system and other adapters or features.
USEABILITY CHARACTERISTICS
By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and monitor. The power cord for the display and system unit is then plugged into an electrical outlet. Power is then turned on the monitor, then the system unit. When the system unit is powered on, it performs a power-on self-test (POST) that takes approximately 60 seconds. After POST has completed successfully, installation of software may then be accomplished.
