NOTE: This list was compiled at the time this article was written. For a listing of the current drivers for 6561/6591 machines, click on the following link:

OS/2 Video Drivers:

The OS/2 team announced a new graphics device driver technology called GRADD (Graphics Adapter Device Driver). GRADD moves a number of functions from the device driver to the operating system, improves Presentation Manager performance, and reduces the Independent Hardware Vendor's development effort.

So, the OS/2 GRADD Video Device Driver is the preferred video driver. It provides more features and faster performance than does the OS/2 Presentation Manager Video Driver. However, the GRADD Video Driver is not supported by base OS/2 Warp Version 3 or OS/2 Warp Version 4. For OS/2 Warp Version 3, you must install Fixpak 35 or later before installing the GRADD Video Driver.

For OS/2 Warp Version 4, you must install Fixpak 5 or later before installing the GRADD Video Driver. The OS/2 Presentation Manager Video Driver will work with OS/2 Warp Versions 3 or 4 with or without any Fixpak.

Audio Device Driver:

The Audio Adapter supplied with some IBM 6561/6591 systems is a Crystal Audio Card that uses the 4237B Crystal audio chip with integrated SRS 3D Sound Technology. The proper OS/2 device driver for this adapter is the OS/2 Crystal Audio Device Driver (z01t06a.exe).

This card can accept a hardware based Wavetable Synthesis upgrade that enhances your audio output by providing full 32-note polyphony. The base configuration of this card supports FM synthesis with the 28-pin PLCC socket NOT populated. Populating this 28-pin PLCC socket will allow an upgrade to support hardware Wavetable Synthesis.

The hardware Wavetable upgrade option is supported by the Cirrus Logic Single-Chip Wavetable Music Synthesizer, part number CS9236-CL. This device when properly populated into the 28-pin PLCC socket on the Crystal audio card will allow the user to play MIDI files with enhanced musical attributes through the MPU-401 interface that is utilized by the hardware Wavetable device. This Wavetable upgrade option can be purchased in small quantities (< 500) by contacting NuHorizons, a Cirrus Logic Distributor, at http://www.nuhorizons.com or at 1-888-747-NUHO for US domestic shipments and 973-882-4290 for international shipments.

In order to implement the Wavetable functionality (MPU-401), the socket must be populated with the CS9236-CL. For OS/2 users, separate device drivers are required to enable the Wavetable (MPU-401). QD7T00A is the approved driver for MPU-401 support.

Busmaster IDE Device Driver:

The OS/2 Busmaster IDE Device Driver is optional. It is not required for an OS/2 installation on the 6561/6591. This driver provides SMART support that can be utilized by other IBM products to monitor your hard drives for potential failures. SMART is part of the IDE hard drives supplied with your 6561/6591 system.

Installing the Busmaster IDE Device Driver (optional)

The installation of these drivers require you to copy them to the OS/2 boot partition of your hard drive. You should be careful to retain a backup copy of your current version of these drivers.

The drivers can be installed in two ways. This procedure requires that you already have IDE support installed on OS/2.

Method 1:
1. Locate the current OS/2 partition on your hard drive. This is usually C: and will contain the OS2 sub-directory.
2. Copy the driver files onto your hard drive in the root directory.

There are two drivers involved. Their function is :

IBM1S506.ADD - base driver for IDE devices (should always be copied)

IBMIDECD.FLT - CD-ROM driver support. (The version on this diskette requires use of the IDE driver above).

The drivers in the root directory are discovered and loaded prior to looking in the OS2/BOOT sub-directory.

3. The entries should already be in config.sys, and you should reboot your system to load the new drivers.

Method 2:
1. Locate the current drivers on your OS/2 hard drive. You can use the following command :

dir \ibm1s506.add /s

The command will show you the sub-directory on your hard drive where the driver may be updated. (Remember to make a backup copy of your old driver.)

2. Copy the driver files onto your hard drive in the sub-directory where the previous version was found.

There are two drivers involved. Their function is :

IBM1S506.ADD - base driver for IDE devices (should always be copied)

IBMIDECD.FLT - CD-ROM driver support. (The version on this diskette requires use of the IDE driver above).

3. The entries should already be in config.sys, and you should reboot your system to load the new drivers.
