PS/1 - What does display resolution mean?

The display image is made up of thousands of tiny dots called pixels. The display represents a "grid" of dots (pixels). The number of horizontal and vertical pixels determine the resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper the image appears. For example, VGA consists of 640 pixels across and 480 pixels down. SVGA, IBM's definition, is 1024 pixels by 768 pixels. Thus, you receive a sharper image with SVGA.
The IBM PS/1 Models 2133, 2155 and 2168 have the ability to easily change the display resolution. To do so, select the PS/1 Tools Group, select PS/1 Fitness and choose Display Select. You have three different display resolution options, 1) Standard Resolution, 2) Medium-High Resolution, and 3) High Resolution. If your resolution cannot be changed, this indicates that you do not have the hardware available to make the change.
STANDARD RESOLUTION:
Using Standard Resolution, the screen resolution is 640x480. Standard Resolution can also referred to as called VGA mode. This resolution requires at least 256K of video memory in order to support 16 colors. If you wish to have 256 colors, this requires at least 512K of video memory.
MEDIUM-HIGH RESOLUTION:
Medium-High resolution is 800x600. This resolution requires at least 256K of video memory for 16 colors and at least 512K of video memory to support 256 colors.
HIGH RESOLUTION:
Using High Resolution, the screen resolution is at least 1024x768. High Resolution is sometimes referred to as SVGA. This resolution requires at least 512K of video memory to support 16 colors and at least 1024K of video memory to support 256 colors.
Remember, in order to take full advantage of the change in resolution and color, you must have applications that support these features. Further, DOS applications must provide their own video drivers.
