Abstract: ECA002, Correction of Processor Bus Speed Setting

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this ECA is to correctly set the processor speed
switch settings in the IBM Aptiva 2153-E3N system.

A limited number of IBM Aptiva 2153-E3N systems were manufactured with the FSB
(Front Side Bus Speed) set for 66Mhz operation instead of 100Mhz operation. The system will
appear to function normally, but will not reach the optimum performance of the 300Mhz processor.

This ECA also provides for rerouting of the IDE cables to allow easier access to the system board,
prevent damage, and a potential "crosstalk" problem by repeated movement and repositioning of the
cables by authorized servicers.

This ECA applies to the 2153-E3N only. Other IBM Aptiva PC models are not affected.

PHYSICAL CHECK:
Systems manufactured with the incorrect processor settings were built between July 15, 1998
through July 31, 1998. The date of manufacture is located on the IBM shipping carton and
is also *located on the rear of the system unit.

On July 31, 1998, IBM Manufacturing began labeling new systems with the number "100"
printed on a RED label attached to the shipping carton just above the carton label. Any system
received with this label is NOT affected by this problem.

DETAIL:
This ECA provides reimbursement for the following two service procedures to correct the FSB
switch settings AND the IDE cable routing above those switches:

Step #1 - Reroute the IDE Cables to gain easier access to SW1,
SW2 and SW3:

1) Power down the system and remove the AC line cord from the AC Receptacle or Power Strip.
Remove all cables from the rear of the system unit, including the keyboard and mouse.
2) Remove the system cover by removing the 4 Phillips head screws attaching the cover to the
chassis. The screws are located at the rear of the system unit.
3) Lay the system on its right side when viewed from the front. The system board and three gray
flat ribbon cables should be clearly visible.
4) Cut and remove the white tie wrap from the three flat ribbon cables.
5) Unplug the power cable from the diskette drive, not the signal cable.
6) Lift the uppermost ribbon cable, which contains a black connector in the middle of the cable,
and pass the diskette drive power connector underneath this ribbon cable.
7) Reinstall the diskette drive power connector.
8) Check the connections of all of the ribbon cables to ensure that they are properly seated.
9) Proceed to Step #2.
=================================================================
Step #2 - Check/Correct the FSB Switch Settings:
1) Rotate the system unit so that the bottom is facing you.
2) Locate SW1, SW2 and SW3. SW1 is located near the top of the system board, SW2 is located
vertically to the right of the DIMM sockets, and SW3 is located above the Processor Module.
3) Check/Set the switches to match the following settings:
SW1 should be :
#1 OFF, #2 ON, #3 OFF, #4 OFF
SW2 should be :
#1 OFF, #2 ON, #3 OFF, #4 OFF, #5 OFF, #6 OFF, #7 ON, #8 OFF
SW3 should be :
#1 ON, #2 ON, #3 ON, #4 ON
4) Replace the cover assembly. Reinstall all cables and the AC power cord that were removed in
item #1 of Step #1.
5) Power the system unit ON. The following POST (Power On Self Test) errors should be displayed:
"0127 CPU clock mismatch"
"0162 Equipment configuration error"
Press ENTER to continue the start-up process. You should not see these messages during subsequent
start-ups.
6) If the POST errors reoccur or there are other POST errors displayed following the update, recheck
all cable connections and switch settings, then proceed with normal problem determination procedures
to isolate the failure.
