IBM 3153 ASCII Terminal Display - Independent Pass-Through printing

Applicable to: World-Wide

The IBM 3151 and 3153 offers, when configured for IBM 3151 emulation, Independent Pass-Through Printing. The IBM 3151 required: IBM Cartridge for Expansion.

Independent Pass-Through Printing is a setup option in the 3153. The 3153 factory default setting for 'Independent Pass-Through Printing'='Off'. Independent Pass-Through Printing allows to send data to the 3153 and simultaneously send data to the attached printer.

Pass-Through Printing Description Background:
- When the host causes the 3153 to enter Pass-through mode, the printer determines the performance of the 3153. If a low-speed printer is used, and when the print buffer fills up, the printer sends a XOFF character to the 3153. The 3153 continues to receive data from the host, and when the 3153 buffer fills up, the 3153 sends a XOFF character to the host. During this period, 3153 operation is suspended.

Example: Host is sending a 30, 40 50-page report to the printer. The 3153 is in Pass-Through Mode and the user of the 3153 must wait until the printer has completed printing the report. During this print operation, the user cannot use the 3153.

Independent Pass-Through Printing-Description:
- Independent Pass-Through printing provides two independent receive buffers, one for data intended for the 3153 and the for data intended for the optional device.

Example: While a printer is printing a 30, 40, 50-page report, the user can use (type, enter data) on the 3153.

Independent Pass-Through Printing-How it Works:
- With independent pass-through printing, the following occurs when based on the following XOFF/XON conditions exists:
- 3153 XOFF/XON:
- When an 3153 XOFF condition occurs the 3153 sends an XOFF character to the host system. When the XOFF condition is removed, the 3153 sends an XON character to the host.

Auxiliary XOFF/XON:
- When the auxiliary device sends an XOFF character to the 3153, the 3153 sends, to the host, the following XOFF sequence: DLE DC2 XOFF 'status' DLE DC4. When the XOFF condition is removed the 3153, the 3153 sends, the the host, the following XON sequence: DLE DC2 XON DLE DC4. 'Status' includes device power on or off, and buffer overflow.

- When the host receives the XOFF sequence, the host sends DLE DC4 to the 3153 to end the pass-through operation. When the host receives the XON sequence, the host sends the DLE DC2 to restart the pass-through operation.
