THINKPAD 765D FEATURES | |
LCD DISPLAY: |
The ThinkPad 765D systems come with a 13.3-inch (measured diagonally) TFT display with 1024 x 768 resolution. These are bright Active Matrix displays. The TFT display provides superior viewing capability and helps lessen the glare indoors. |
KEYBOARD AND TRACKPOINT III: |
The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you to quickly access system functions, such as power management control. The keyboard tilts to a comfortable angle for typing when the system is opened, and there is a palm-rest area. If desired, you can adjust the keyboard to have no tilt. The keyboard lifts up allowing access to the Ultrabay that holds the diskette drive (FDD), HDD, and battery for quick upgrades or battery changes. The TrackPoint III "drag-and-drop" function of the click buttons is enhanced. You can lock and hold the buttons in without continuously pushing on them. |
PROCESSOR: |
This system has a 166MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, 256KB L2 cache, and floating-point decimal providing exceptional performance. |
MEMORY: |
The ThinkPad 765D system is designed to use 144-pin, 64-bit EDO SO DIMM, 3 V, non-parity memory. 32MB of system memory (RAM) is standard and can be expanded up to 104MB. Refer to the 765D/765L User's Guide for more information. |
PCI BUS: |
The PCI bus supports 32-bit transfers for faster performance. |
PCMCIA: |
The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. The slot will support the new CardBus (5) PC card. |
NOTE: |
(5) Presently available in DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95. |
STORAGE: |
The customer-removable, customer-installable hard drive is 3.0GB standard. The drive is easily removed by lifting up the keyboard. 1.44MB FDD comes standard. |
THINKPAD ULTRABAY: |
The ThinkPad Ultrabay, also standard with the system, is an intelligent bay that switches its pinout signals to allow the installation of an FDD, second Li-Ion battery, HDD, or CD-ROM in what would normally be just the FDD bay. The installation of a second hard drive requires the ThinkPad Second HDD Adapter optional feature. |
CD-ROM: |
The 765D comes with a 12 cm CD-ROM, 8X-speed (150/1200 Kbps), in the ThinkPad Ultrabay instead of the diskette drive. The FDD is shipped with the system. |
INTEGRATED MULTIMEDIA CAPABILITY: |
Consider the ThinkPad 765D with 166MHz Pentium processor and MMX technology if you need more advanced and integrated multimedia capability -- CD-ROM, audio, and video combined. The integrated, removable 8X CD-ROM drive (150/1200 Kbps), Total Image Video with MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Half Horizontal Resolution (HHR) support, stereo speakers, TheaterSound (MIDI Wave Table Audio), and other features make the ThinkPad 765D MPC-2 compliant, setting it apart from less integrated multimedia competitive systems. |
MEDIA PROCESSOR (MWAVE DSP): |
Features and benefits include: |
AUDIO: |
The audio capability on the system board and the integrated microphone allow voice annotation and audio capability. The system is equipped with audio in/out jacks for stereo speakers, headphone, or ex-ternal microphone. A separate slide volume control is located to the rear of the keyboard on the system. The system supports Sound Blaster audio applications. |
VIDEO: |
The new ThinkPad 765D system has PCI bus support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance and has 2MB of video RAM. The 765D also has enhanced video that supports video-in and video-out (NTSC/PAL), video capture, hardware video acceleration, scaling, and color space conversion. |
TOTAL IMAGE VIDEO WITH MPEG-2 HALF HORIZONTAL RESOLUTION: |
The 765D system supports MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 HHR video decoding for significantly improved video performance. |
INFRARED: |
The systems have IR transceivers in front and back for wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 765D is designed for compliance with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link specification Version 1.0. The system supports three modes of operation: |
OTHER FEATURES: |
The ThinkPad 765D systems have the full complement of ports (enhanced parallel, serial, and external display). The FDD external attachment port is standard on all 765D models. In addition, a 240-pin connector supports the following ThinkPad IBM docking solutions: |
NOTE: |
The IBM ThinkPad 765 models do NOT support the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II. The 765D has additional ports -- MIDI/joystick, video-in, and video-out. An RJ11 jack is also included because the DSP provides data/fax modem capability with speeds up to 28.8 Kbps for data and 14.4 Kbps for fax The RJ11 jack is standard in the U.S.A. and certain other countries. |

ENHANCED VIDEO AND MPEG RESTRICTIONS:
Video capture/overlay/MPEG playback functions not supported are:
-1024 x 768, 256 color, 75Hz in OS/2 Warp only.
-1024 x 768, 65,536 color, 75Hz.
-All 16 color modes.
-All 1280 x 1024 modes in OS/2 Warp only.
-Virtual screen mode (such as 800 x 600 on a television or 1024 x 768 on an LCD).
MPEG-2 HHR PAL format clips cannot be played back regardless of operating system.
When using MPEG, CD-i Interactive is not supported.
When using OS/2 Warp, some CD-i CDs cannot be played.
Simultaneous use of MPEG and Mwave DSP modem is not supported.
In OS/2 Warp, session switch operation between a full-screen session and an OS/2 Presentation Manager session is not supported on a television.
In OS/2 Warp, the video capture may be further restricted by system configuration, for example, system memory size, screen resolution, or screen refresh rate.
Movies provided in Active Movie format on a PAL Television (800 x 600) will not support switching the resolution from full-screen to Windows-screen. The Desktop resolution will be switched from 800 x 600 to 640 x 480. To recover from this press Fn+F7 twice.
Movies provided in Active Movie format will not support switching the display device (from LCD to CRT, or TV) in full-screen mode.
MPEG playback is not supported under DOS or WIN-OS/2.
In OS/2 Warp, it is recommended that when video-in recorder is active, it be the only application running on the system.
The enhanced video features, such as overlay and capture, and MPEG features cannot be used concurrently.
In OS/2, and using video-in only "Ultimotion real time compression" is supported (even though other's are listed in the application).
MPEG-2 HHR transport stream is not supported under OS/2 Warp Version 3.
In OS/2 Warp or Windows 95, the FaxWorks call center will not function correctly when playing MPEG.
The MIDI/joystick port on the ThinkPad 765D cannot be used while these MPEG options are being used.
Some types of video CDs are not supported.
MWAVE DSP LIMITATIONS:
If there is no sound after Suspend/Resume while a CD is playing with Win95 or WinNT, please adjust the volume from Mwave audio mixer 1 panel, or remove all mute check marks of CD/LINE/MIC on the volume control of the multimedia accessory.
Audio and modem features share the hardware resource of the Mwave WAVE DSP. This concurrent usage has some restrictions. For example, while using the 28.8 Kbps modem at 28.8 Kbps or while receiving a fax/voice call, if you attempt to use the MIDI audio feature it may not work correctly or the system may become unstable. Complete the modem or fax/voice application before using MIDI audio applications.
In OS/2, the concurrent use of digital audio, MIDI, and digital video applications may show some error message or the function may be unstable.
In WIN-OS/2, FaxWorks Voice sometimes fails to receive if the system is in suspend mode.
Some WAVE audio files cannot be played when using the the DSP modem. This problem does not occur when using Windows 95.
Mwave audio cannot be played when the Mwave modem is connected at 28.8 Kbps. This limitation is not applicable to Windows 95.
Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session is not supported.
If the Mwave modem is performing simultaneous voice and data transmission, the data rate of the modem is automatically set to 14.4 bps.
Sending a fax between ThinkPads may be unreliable unless both systems are at Mwave Release 2.0.
In OS/2 Warp, MIDI applications are not supported with simultaneous modem use.
For MPEG playback, the sampling frequency is 44.1KHz only.
OTHER OS/2 LIMITATIONS:
In OS/2, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted by HPFS on a system that has more than 64MB of memory.
OS/2 Digital Video Player may fail to play some AVI-format video files.
The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video support for Indeo**-format video file playback.
WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION LIMITATIONS:
In Windows NT 3.51 and NT 4.0, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted by NTFS.
SUSPEND/RESUME LIMITATIONS:
When using a PCMCIA modem, a fax or modem incoming call cannot be received during suspend mode. (PCMCIA Wake up on Ring indicate is not available in Win95 OSR2.)
The system will go to suspend even if any PCMCIA communication cards including the following are used (though they are prevented on some previous systems with PC Card Director on OSR1).
- IBM 3270 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
- IBM 5250 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
- IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter
- IBM Credit Card Adapter for Ethernet
- During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60 mA at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.
- Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
- If the system is suspended/resumed during the following operations, unpredictable results may occur. The application should be closed before entering suspend or hibernation.
- Audio record or playback
- Video record or playback
- Playback of MPEG file, AVI file, video CD, CD-i
- Active communications (PCMCIA modem) in OS/2 applications may hang
- DOS games
OTHER LIMITATIONS:
Due to the way Windows 95 handles docking and un-docking, it is recommended that the user boot a system un-docked before hot/warm docking or hot/warm un-docking.
Remote IPL is not supported with ISA Ethernet Adapter 10 base 5/T (35G2799).
When using "Async/SDLC ISA Adapter" with PC5250+3270 Version 4.1 on Windows 3.1, if the I-frame length is set to 2057, it causes unexpected disconnection of the 3270 session.
When an external VGA (640 x 480) CRT is attached, the display setting in the ThinkPad setup features must be set to LCD or CRT but not to both.
A video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video pass through, VESA bus) is not supported.
When SelectaDock Model I is being used with a SCSI driver installed, suspend/resume function and warm/hot docking are not supported. The exception is that Windows 95 supports warm/hot docking even when a SCSI driver is installed.
Simultaneous use of IR and other timing-critical or computation intensive applications, such as communications and multimedia, is not recommended.
PCMCIA LIMITATIONS:
IBM ATA flash memory and Intel flash memory cards are not supported in Windows 95 OSR2.
PCMCIA (2.0/2.1) cards are supported in the system or SelectaDock I/II for all operating systems.
In OS/2, the Xircom Ethernet + 28.8 Kbps modem is not supported.
The ATA PCMCIA card is not supported when using Microsoft Windows NT.
PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.
When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used.
Before removing storage PCMCIA PC cards, such as hard disk, flash memory, or SRAM, the computer must be turned off
PCMCIA CARDBUS SUPPORT LIMITATIONS:
These systems support CardBus PC(5) cards that draw a maximum of 2.64 watts (0.8 A at 3.3 V DC).
WINDOWS 3.11 OR DOS:
CardBus PC Cards, PCMCIA 2.0 or 2.1 cards are supported in the system and docking stations.
WINDOWS 95:
PCMCIA 2.0 or 2.1 cards are supported in the system and docking stations.
One (1) CardBus PC Card may be used in either system slot. Simultaneous use of two (2) CardBus PC Cards is not supported.
If a CardBus card is being used, no other PCMCIA card may be hot plugged.
CardBus PC Cards are not supported in any docking station.
A newly inserted CardBus PC Card may not be recognized correctly by Windows 95 (Windows 95 may mistake it for a previously installed CardBus PC card). If this happens, do the following:
- Open My Computer, Control Panel, and then System folder.
- Click on the Device Manager Tab
- Select the device that is no longer being used
- Remove it
- Restart the system
WINDOWS NT OR OS/2:
PCMCIA 2.0 or 2.1 cards are supported in the system and docking stations.
CardBus PC Cards are not supported in the system or any docking station.
