Aptiva/IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC - How to create an icon/Shortcut on the Desktop or in a folder in Windows 95/98
Applicable to: World-Wide
Please note: This document applies to machines using Windows 95. This document does not imply or assume that your machine was preloaded with Windows 95 originally.
If you believe you have erased an Icon:
Check the "Recycle Bin" for the icon first. If it is there, click and hold left mouse button down and drag it to an open desktop area and then release the mouse button. Otherwise, continue to the next section.
If you want to create an Icon/Shortcut in an existing Desktop folder, open that folder first:
1. Click on an open area of the desktop, or in the open folder, with the right mouse button.
2. Select New and then Shortcut from the pop-up menu. This will open the "Create Shortcut" window.
3. If you know the path and the name of the executable file (usually a file with .EXE extension), type the path and file name in the "command line" box:
X:\PATH\FILE NAME
where:
X = drive letter where application resides
path = directory name
file name = name.EXE (.EXE in most cases)
4. If the path and file name are unknown, select "browse".
5. The Browse window displays a "Look in" box, a "Programs" statement in the "Files of type" box, a "File Name" box, and all of the folders on the hard drive in the large window. Scan the folders for the directory you want and double-click on that folder.
6. All of the program files in that folder will appear. Select the file name or icon that you are looking for. The file name will usually contain the name, or a portion of the software application name, and the icon may be similar to a logo or label on the application's publication or disks.
NOTE: If there are multiple executable files with icons and you're unsure about which is the correct one, you may have to experiment with the various choices until the right one is found. A shortcut icon created from an incorrect file can be deleted by clicking on it once with the right mouse button and selecting "delete" from the pop-up menu.
7. Highlight the icon by clicking once with left button and then select Open.
8. Select "Next". This brings up the title menu with the name of the selected file in the name box. Sometimes the name associated with a shortcut icon may be quite long or vague. The name can be changed at this point to a shorter or more recognizable name for the software application.
9. Once the name has been verified or changed, select "Finish".
10. Double-click on the shortcut icon to verify that it works.
