TITLE
IBM PC Server Advanced Systems Management Adapter - New Functionality with Remote POST Console Support
OVERVIEW
Now higher levels of management and control can be achieved on IBM Netfinity and PC Servers with the updated Advanced Systems Management Adapter software used in conjunction with the Advanced Systems Management Adapter. This updated software utility supports Remote POST Console, has enhanced security features, and supports Remote Diagnostics on selected PC Servers. These features can significantly improve the control you have over your Netfinity or PC Server network by providing functions similar to that of large systems designed to run mission-critical business applications.
These new features help you confidently build a reliable foundation for your networked business system by giving you the tools to reduce service costs, maintain higher levels of system availability and control, and prevent problems before they occur through remote system monitoring. Features include:
o Remote POST Console - echos text data during system start-up to a remote ANSI or Netfinity Manager terminal
o ANSI Terminal Support - allows remote dial-in from an ANSI terminal for:
- Viewing the server state of operation
- Viewing and clearing the Advanced Systems Management Adapter error log
- Controlling server power-on and -off
- Resetting the server
- Remote POST Console
o Improved password protection
o Six user profiles - user ID, password, read only flag, last login time, and a dial-back configuration
o Remote Diagnostics - selected models of the PC Server 325 and 330 systems
This updated software utility will be available with the Advanced Systems Management Adapter option and on ServerGuide 4.0. In addition, it will be available on October 31, 1997, for downloading from the World Wide Web at:

DESCRIPTION
The updated Advanced Systems Management Adapter software in conjunction with the Advanced Systems Management Adapter can increase the control of your networked business systems to improve system availability and reliability by:
o Delivering large system control to reduce downtime of your Netfinity or PC Server business-critical applications
o Providing similar level of service and support found on larger systems to keep your networked business systems up and running
The new features on the updated Advanced Systems Management Adapter software include:
o Remote POST Console - Text mode data can be echoed to a remote ANSI or Netfinity Manager terminal for viewing system boot through Power-On Self Test (POST). During POST, the user may enter ESC for fast POST or F1 for configuration screens. This function must be initialized through the remote terminal before system boot. This means the server must be re-booted to invoke this feature. A terminal using Netfinity Manager communicating with a Netfinity or PC Server using the Advanced Systems Management Adapter and Advanced Systems Management Adapter software provides a higher level of functionality and an easy-to-use, graphical interface. In addition, it allows the system administrator to:
- Replay the POST that was last viewed by Netfinity Manager
- Stop and restart the POST sequence
- Control the speed of the replay to fast, medium, or slow

o ANSI Terminal Support that allows customers to dial into a Netfinity or PC Server using Advanced Systems Management Adapter and view the server status, view and clear the Advanced Systems Management Adapter error log, establish power control and reset of the server, and enter into Remote Console mode.
o Improved security features that include:
- Passwords requiring at least five characters and one special character
- Six user profiles - user ID, password, read-only (R/O) flag, last login time, and dial-back configuration
- R/O flags controlling who can perform write, power-on, and reset operations
o Remote Diagnostics on new models of the PC Server 325 and 330 containing ROM-based diagnostics

o IBM Advanced Systems Management Adapter Configuration/Update Utility & Device Driver Diskette (Version 2.0)
o IBM Netfinity Advanced Systems Management Adapter Support Diskette for OS/2 and Novell NetWare (Version 2.0)
o IBM Netfinity Advanced Systems Management Adapter Support Diskette for Windows NT (Version 2.0)
The updated Advanced Systems Management Adapter software will also be available with the Advanced Systems Management Adapter option (94G7578) and on ServerGuide 4.0. After October 31, 1997, customers who purchase an Advanced Systems Management Adapter without this update can download it from the Web site:
