IBM G41 and G50 Monitors - Dim, hazy or blurry display
Applicable to: United States
Service Information:
The G41/G50 monitors will automatically dim when the maximum brightness/contrast levels are reached. This is a designed feature to prevent damage. What happens is the beam current limit circuitry in the monitor will turn down the contrast / brightness when a bright screen is displayed. This is to prevent doming. There is a long time constant on this circuit to ensure it only has an effect when needed.
Doming is a visual effect that occurs when the shadow mask (a mesh attached to the inside the picture tube of the monitor) gets too hot. The result is that the holes the beams pass through become distorted and the image on the monitor may appear blotchy or very slightly off color in various spots. If doming occurs, power off the monitor and let it cool for one hour.
The best way to adjust the brightness/contrast on the G41/G50 is to turn both controls down. Then adjust the contrast to maximum. Then move the brightness a small amount at a time until the desired level is reached.
