Aptiva - Troubleshooting preloaded games for sound
Applicable to: United States
Several DOS games have been preloaded on Aptivas, such as:
JumpStart Kindergarten
Undersea Adventure
Cyberia
Descent
Jack Nicklaus Golf
Each of these games are set up to run in a DOS Windows session. When debugging a problem with one of these games you may want to:
1.) Test other DOS games to ensure that the environment (these games are set to run in) has adequate sound hardware available. Jack Nicklaus would be a good one to try because if JN golf cannot detect the sound hardware then JN Golf will play its sound through the PC speaker.
2.) Check to see if this problem is seen after returning from a Suspend that was performed while within a DOS game. DOS games often (very often) lockup when playing AFTER returning from a Suspend that has been performed WHILE playing the game. Reboot the system, restart the game and everything should be back to normal. Download the MFIX.EXE. to resolve the problem.
3.) Try running the DOS game (that is having the problem) in DOS mode.
4.) Sometimes for some reasons a DOS environment may get into a bad state. Shutdown completely and restart the system. Then try the game again.
