Aptiva - Connecting an Apple LaserWriter to an IBM Aptiva

The correct cables are a Hayes compatible cable (9-pin to 25-pin) and a null modem connector. Attach the Hayes compatible cable to serial port B on the Aptiva. The other end of the Hayes compatible cable is attached to the null modem connector which is then connected to the LaserWriter's 25-pin serial port.
A few things were discovered about the LaserWriter IIg that may vary from other LaserWriters:
1. The Windows 95 printer properties are defaulted to PostScript level 2, the LaserWriter IIg only supports level 1.
2. Compress bitmaps is selected by default. This needs to be changed so that bitmaps are not compressed.
3. Set the printer port to COM 2 and make sure the port settings are 9600, 8 bits, Xon/Xoff.
4. Find out how much memory the LaserWriter has on its I/O board (this is usually printed on the Status page which is automatically generated when the printer is turned on). Set the memory field in the printer properties to this size.
5. Increase the values for the time-outs to their max.
6. For the PostScript setting make sure the selectable switch on the printer is set to 0 or 5.
