TP 380Z - Considerations for Windows 98
Applicable to: World-Wide
Below are a list of considerations for running Windows 98 on your ThinkPad
- When a Xircom Ethernet 10/100 CardBus card is used, the system hangs after a combination of suspend mode, then hibernation, and then suspend mode again. To recover from this, please restart the computer.
-
- When a Xircom Credit Card 10/100+Modem 56 card is used, the modem features may not work correctly if the computer is connected to a LAN.
-
- Windows 98 will not complete loading during a cold boot when a 3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mbps LAN CardBus PC Card and an ATA PC Card are installed in the computer. A "Fatal exception error" or "Windows protection error" will appear when you attempt to cold boot the computer. The following combinations were confirmed to produce this symptom:
-
- 3Com Fast EtherLinkXL CardBus + IBM Intelligent Flash
-
- 3Com Fast EtherLinkXL CardBus + Epson Flash Packer
-
- 3Com Fast EtherLinkXL CardBus + Mobil Maxtor 131 MB PCMCIA Hard drive
-
- After a Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode is inserted into the computer and the driver is installed from the diskette provided with the card, the system hangs after a reboot. Using the Windows 98 native drivers for this card does not cause this problem.
-
- The Hayes ACCURA 56K PCMCIA Modem is not supported in this computer.
-
- The modem function of the 3Com EtherLink III LAN + Modem 33.6 combo card does not work after a suspend/hibernation operation when the card is installed in the system or in the port replicator.
-
- A Xircom Credit Card Ethernet II PC Card can not connect to the network after a suspend/resume operation on the computer.
-
- To use the zoom video feature, you must obtain a card with explicit Windows 98 support from the supplier. Two known cards are:
-
- Fujifilm RI7001 MPEG Card
-
- Real Magic Pocket
-
- After resuming the system from suspend mode, the speed at which a file is copied to an ATA PC Card is extremely slow. This symptom has been confirmed on the following cards:
-
- IBM Solid State File (20MB)
-
- Maxtor Mobile Max 131MB PCMCIA Hard Drive
-
- After dynamically changing the color depth from 16 bit or higher to 256 colors, the folders on the desktop change from yellow to gray. To prevent this from happening, before changing the color depth to 256 colors, uncheck the option "Show icons using all possible colors".
-
- The RI resume fails the second time only when using HyperTerminal.
-
- After resuming from hibernation mode, the driver for a USB camera will show a conflict in Device Manager. To recover from this remove the USB device from Device Manager, and then remove and reattach the USB camera. Windows 98 will redetect the hardware and reinstall the device in Device Manager.
-
- After leaving the system in suspend/hibernation for four or more hours, it may take about 30-60 seconds to have the system resume normal operations.
-
- Playback window is not a hardware overlay when returning from a DOS full screen to the desktop using CTRL+ESC while playing back a MPEG/AVI using ActiveMovie. To prevent this from happening, ensure that you are running DirectX 5.2 and IE 4.01.
-
- Colored lines appear on the right hand edge of a MPEG file using active movie when LCD screen expansion enabled and the window moved to the right so that part of it is cut off. To prevent this from happening, center the MPEG movie on the display.
-
- Recording through the line-in jack into Sound Recorder fails when the volume slider for the line-in is moved to the right channel only.
-
- A WAVE file being played by MediaPlayer will stutter after resume if the system was suspended while another WAVE file was being played back by ActiveMovie. To prevent this from happening, do not suspend/hibernate the computer while it is playing a WAVE file.
-
- System hangs when resuming from standby (suspend) mode while a playing a MPEG file or video capture. To prevent this from happening, do not enter standby or suspend mode while playing a MPEG file.
-
- The ActiveMovie2 application under Windows 98 does not "see" the CD-i (*.DAT) data file. Therefore, you cannot playback CD-i directly on ActiveMovie2.
-
- Flash Memory PC Cards are not supported under Windows 98.
-
- When trying to play a multimedia sound file after resuming from hibernation mode, the sound file will not play back properly if the system was hibernated while the sound file was being played.
-
- The Windows 98 power management may incorrectly report remaining battery life.
-
- When the IBM Turbo TokenRing card is inserted into system, it may take about 2 minutes for it to appear in Device Manger. The card will function normally during that time.
-
- Some PC cards currently working on Windows 95 may not be fully functional when operating under Windows 98 on these machines. For the latest status visit the ThinkPad Web Site at: http://www.pc.ibm.com/thinkpad
-
- Hibernation on a system with a modem installed in the port replicator may result in a locked system when trying to resume.
-
- The following cards are not supported:
-
- Adaptec APA-1480 SlimSCSI CardBus
-
- "Multiple-monitor function" is supported. To take advantage of this feature, please download the latest video driver from Web Site.
