Aptiva - 2158/2163/2164 Considerations - Modem connection

Description:
Modem will not connect under specific poor line conditions, when using the IGN dialer and connecting to a 3Com head end.

Models affected:
All US and Canada 2158, 2163, and 2164 machines

How to duplicate:
May not be able to duplicate unless specific line conditions are present and IGN head end is using 3Com software.

Root cause:
Modem Driver

Workaround:
An applet has been placed on the Recovery CD and in the preload that when run, will slow the modem down allowing it to connect to an IGN host. A new modem driver has been created and placed on UC which will resolve this problem. When the new drivers are received from UC, the effects of the 40K fix will be undone and the customer should be able to connect at speeds up to 56K. In the future (no estimated date yet) a new Recovery CD will be created with the updated modem driver.

From Windows:
1) Open Windows explorer
2) Change to C:\IBMTOOLS directory
3) Double click on 40Kfix.exe
