TP 760,765,770 - 32MB SO-DIMM memory failures may appear as program hang

Applicable to: World-Wide

IBM internal testing has shown that a potential quality problem exists with the Options by IBM (OBI) 32MB SODIMM Memory Module (P/N 92G7342) shipped from IBM in July, August, September and the first half of October. The quality problem results in failure upon installation of the memory module.

Symptom:
Failures with specific and identified 32MB SO DIMM memory option P/N 92G7342 (FRU P/N 42H2769) in combination with another module of this part or any other SO DIMM memory Option or FRU.

The failure may appear in the following operating systems:

Windows 95 could display a failure as a REGISTRY error. The Registry error will not necessarily point to a memory problem. Windows 95 will fail when the error occurs during operation, so the Windows 95 error could have a wide range of symptoms in applications and not just the above registry error.

Windows NT can display a file corruption error upon failure during the NT boot sequence (NT Log-On screen) and it may indicate possible file corruption. In this case, the file has NOT been corrupted. The display at the Log-On screen will look similar to a memory TRAP error and lock up the machine, forcing the user to re-boot the ThinkPad.

OS/2 can receive a TRAP002 (memory), TRAP008 (double fault) or TRAP00D upon failure.

Windows 3.1 can display a General Protection Fault (GPF) or hang during operation.

Memory Module Identification:

Shipping Box:
**STOP: If your box displays the identification markings indicated below; DO NOT OPEN IT.
Return it to your place of purchase for a replacement.

Look for SAM... *Header Code
J141B or J128H
Insure the part number is listed as above (P92G7342).

Front of memory module:

11S40H8652Z will be displayed as the first part of the label bar code.

ALL defective modules will have SAM 708 or 709 or 710 located in the bottom right corner of the label.

Back of memory module:

ALL defective modules will have the "AI AM-2" markings, as shown in the right corner above.
ALL defective date codes are between 9732 - 9738.
ALL defective memory modules will display a label marked with SEC KMM466F404AS1-L6 or L6M.
ALL defective memory WILL have an IBM label as shown above.

**IBM can ONLY warranty memory with the above label markings. You may return your memory to any IBM Authorized
service center with your proof of purchase or call IBM at 1-800-772-2227 for further assistance.

Affected ThinkPad Machine Models:
Affected ThinkPads are as below: ( ALL MODELS)

1. Actual fails have been observed on 760E series and 765 series machines when the suspect DIMM is installed. Errors MAY NOT occur until 64MB (total memory configuration) is installed on the machines listed below. If you have this memory
in the machines under item #2 they should be replaced as well if you are having failures.

This series includes the following models:

760E, 760ED, 760EL, 760ELD, 760XD, 760XL, 765D, 765L & 770

Note: The following models ship with one 16MB DIMM already installed, so should fail right away with the suspect DIMM:
760XD all
765D all
765L all
760EL (only models with Windows NT preload -x4K)

2. The suspect DIMM can also be installed on the following ThinkPad models. However, these models only accept one DIMM. No fails have actually been observed on these models in limited lab testing.

365X, 365XD
380, 380D, 380E, 380ED
385, 385D, 385ED
560, 560E

Solution:
Remove the 32MB SO DIMM(s) identified in the "Memory Module Identification" (above) and replace with a new memory module.

All existing stock of the effected Memory has been purged.

OEM (Other Equipment Manufacturer) memory having the same label information and failure mode, minus the IBM option or FRU number, should be returned to your point of sale for resolution.
