Aptiva - 2144/2168-1xx Printing with HP5L
Applicable to: EMEA
Symptom:
Installed a HP Laserjet 5 L series printer, can print out from all Native Windows applications such as "Paint" and "Notebook", but not from MS-Works. As soon as you click on print, either of two error messages appears "No default printer installed, go to the control panel" or "Printer too busy". We reinstalled the printer driver and the printer is set as default printer, it also comes up as this in the control panel. Disabling the spooler even after a recovery doesn't help.
Problem Isolation Aid:
None
Fix:
The first two driver disks which come with the printer are causing the problem. These two disks contain the HP Laserjet printing system and driver. Remove these if you have installed them and only install the PCL5 driver on disk three. Then use the usual method of adding a printer, but instead of putting disk1 in, put disk3 in. The printer now works using the PCL5 driver. The problem is now solved.
