PS/1 - Automatic Setting of NUMLOCK When Exiting a Program

Applicable to: United States

Any applications which turns NUMLOCK off when you exist a program could be an annoyance. There is a process in which you could issue a command in a batch file to keep NUMLOCK ON even after you close a program. The instructions for this process is found in the file NUMLOCK.COM on the PS/1. The file is located in the C:\WORKS\PROGRAM directory and is not specific to the Works program. This means that the file will perform outside of the Works program, allowing the command NUMLOCK ON or NUMLOCK OFF to be issued at the command prompt or in a batch file.

To use the file, copy this file to the root directory. With this process, you do not have to gave a "path" to the file. Use the DOS File System to copy the file from the C:\WORKS\PROGRAM directory to the root directory of the fixed drive. If using a diskette-based PS/1, copy NUMLOCK.COM from the A:\PROGRAM directory of the Works Program diskette to any diskette from which the file will be used.

After copying the files, add the line NUMLOCK ON (or NUMLOCK OFF) to the end of a batch program that starts the program/game which changes the NUMLOCK setting. For example, assume you have Tetris loaded on the fixed drive of your PS/1. It turns NUMLOCK off when you exit the game. You want NUMLOCK to be left on. You may go to YOUR SOFTWARE and open the folder that houses the Tetris files, click once on the filename that starts Tetris, you will see an "Add to list" option at the bottom of the screen that allows you to add the program to the Main Folder. If you select this option, a batch file will be created in the root directory with the same name as the filename you clicked on to start the game. The extension for the file will be .BAT. If the word TETRIS starts the Tetris program, a file called TETRIS.BAT will be placed in the root (C:\) directory of your fixed drive and in the Main Folder. You have already copied the NUMLOCK.COM file from the C:\WORKS\PROGRAM directory to the C:\ root directory. Now, start Works and choose to Open an Existing File. At the "File to open" prompt, type in C:\TETRIS.BAT and press ENTER twice to open it as a Word Processor file. You can now edit the file. The NUMLOCK ON (or NUMLOCK OFF) command can be added as the last line of the batch file. When you use the "Add to list" option in YOUR SOFTWARE, the last line of the batch file is :END. After opening the batch file as a word processing file, press <Ctrl> + <End> to go to the end of the file. Press ENTER to open a new line and type NUMLOCK ON. Choose File from the menu bar, select Save As, verify the filename, select "TEXT" from the Format box and press ENTER. Select OK to save the file without formatting, select NO to save changes, then Exit the Works program. When you restart a program or game from the batch in the YOUR SOFTWARE Main Folder, NUMLOCK will automatically be on ON even after you exist the program.

NOTE: For this tip to work properly, the C:\ root directory must be included in the PATH statement of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file!
