Network Station - Connecting to a MetaFrame/WinFrame published application

Applicable to: World-Wide

Brief overview of published applications

Citrix WinFrame and Citrix MetaFrame in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Terminal Server Edition have the ability to provide published applications. A published application is a Windows application that can be accessed by an ICA client. When an ICA client connects to a published application on a WinFrame or MetaFrame server, only that application is run in the ICA session. This means that there is not a Windows desktop.

One advantage of published applications is that they can be setup so that they can be run anonymously. This means that no authentication is required when starting the published application. Another advantage of published applications is that they can be load balanced across many MetaFrame or WinFrame servers. For more information on how to setup load balancing and published applications, refer to your MetaFrame/WinFrame documentation.

Setting up Network Station ICA Client to connect to published applications

The Network Station ICA client that is part of Network Station Manager 3.0.2 and greater is required to connect to published applications. First, you will need to configure a published application on the MetaFrame/WinFrame server. As part of this process, you will give the published application a name. This name will be used in setting up the Network Station ICA client to connect to the published application. For the purposes of this document, we will use PubAppName as our published application.

To configure the Network Station ICA Client you will need to start Network Station Manager. Go to Programs -> Menus -> System Defaults (or your desired group or user) -> Local Programs. Configure the fields as follows:

ICACLNT

-h x.x.x.x -lb -- PubAppName

Where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the WinFrame/MetaFrame server hosting the published application, or the IP address of the master browser for the load balanced group of MetaFrame/WinFrame servers. PubAppName is the published application name as set on the WinFrame/MetaFrame server.
