Aptiva - Installing IBM PC DOS 7.0 On A PS/1

Applicable to: United States

You can use the newest DOS features on your PS/1 computer when you upgrade to IBM PC DOS 7. Installing DOS 7 involves the following procedures:

1. Make your Recovery diskette set!!!
2. Make a complete backup of your system.
3. Install IBM PC DOS 7.

Follow the steps under each procedure in these instructions as a supplement to the IBM PC DOS 7 installation instructions under "PC DOS Standard Installation" in the "IBM PC DOS 7 User's Guide". This will ensure that all of your PS/1 software functions properly after IBM PC DOS 7 is installed. Before you install the DOS 7.0 Upgrade, if you are using a virus checker, temporarily disable it. This will eliminate false messages from the virus checker that could occur during installation. If you want to be able to uninstall DOS 7.0 and restore DOS 5.0, you will need either one blank 1MB diskette and one blank 2MB diskette or two blank 2MB diskettes to complete these procedures.

1. MAKE YOUR RECOVERY DISKETTE SET!!!

Be sure to make your Recovery diskette set before you install IBM PC DOS 7. You will not be able to use the "Create PS/1 RECOVERY Diskette" function to make a bootable Recovery diskette after you have installed DOS 7.0. If you install Stacker disk compression with DOS 7, you will need to use your bootable Recovery diskette and Recovery diskette set in the event that you need to restore your preloaded software.

2. MAKE A COMPLETE BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM...

It is always best to make a complete backup of your system before upgrading your operating system. It is very important to have a backup at all times, but more so when you are trying to update your operating system.

3. INSTALL IBM PC DOS 7...

To install IBM PC DOS 7:

a. Close the Program Manager window to exit Windows.
b. Select "Go to DOS Prompt" from the PS/1 Menu.
c. Insert the PC DOS 7 Set-up Diskette 1 in drive A.
d. Type "a:setup" at the DOS prompt, then press Enter.
e. Carefully follow the instructions on your screen. Insert a blank 1MB or 2MB diskette and the IBM PC DOS 7 setup diskettes when prompted.

NOTE: This setup procedure creates a PC DOS 7/0 Tools group in the Program Manager window containing the programs: Central Point Backup, Central Point Undelete, and IBM Anti-Virus/DOS.

Follow the instructions to continue installing DOS 7.0 until you come to the optional tools installation window. During the installation, a selection window will be displayed that lets you specify the optional tools you want to.

To copy the files necessary for each optional tool to your harddrive, you must change the selection choice from NO to YES for the selected tool. To select an optional tool, use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to scroll through the list of optional tools. Each list item is highlighted as you select it. Note that there are more tools then can appear in the window. If you see the "More" at the top of the optional tools selection window, use the UP ARROW to scroll to the top of the list. Press ENTER to select an optional tool for your system. Note that pressing ENTER toggles your choices from NO to YES and YES to NO. Continue to scroll through the screen making your choices. When finished, select the "Options correct. Continue Setup." line and press the ENTER key.

Note: Options that remain unselected at IBM PC DOS 7 installation can be installed at a later time using the PC DOS 7 installation diskettes.

The next window will include the following entry: "Backup previous DOS files". If you want to be able to uninstall DOS 7.0 and restore DOS 5.0, use the UP ARROW key to highlight and the ENTER key to toggle the "Backup previous DOS files" to YES. At the next screen, you will be asked if you want to back up your previous DOS files. Select "YES". To continue, select "Options correct. Continue Setup" and press the ENTER key. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the installation.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO YOUR PS/1 SOFTWARE

Backup/Restore:
After you install DOS 7, the PS/1 Backup/Restore program in PS/1 Fitness will continue to function but will create backup data sets with the built-in PS/1 Tools backup function (DOS 5.0) and not use the new DOS 7 Central Point Backup. If you choose to use Central Point Backup, you can access the Windows version of the program from the PC DOS 7.0 Tools group. To use the DOS version of the program, exit Windows and enter the following from the C: prompt:

CPBACKUP
To restore from a backup you performed before you installed DOS 7, you must use the RESTORE command in DOS 7 instead of the Restore button in the PS/1 Backup/Restore program.

Virus Checking:
If you chose to install the IBM AntiVirus/DOS program during the DOS 7 installation, you should disable the VSTOP command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This will save about 12 kilobytes (KB) of conventional memory. To disable VSTOP, do the following:
a. Select PS/1 Fitness in the PS/1 Tools Group in the Windows Program Manager.
b. Select Virus Checking.
c. Select Inactive.
d. Select OK.
e. Exit Windows and reboot your PS/1 for the change to take effect.

IBM AntiVirus will make the necessary changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to activate the antivirus shield at boot time. To perform a virus check at any time, select the PC DOS 7.0 Tools Group in Windows and then select IBM AntiVirus. You can also run the DOS version of the IBM AntiVirus program by entering the following at the C: prompt: IBMAVD
