Aptiva - 2140/2142 Considerations - Mercenaries

Applicable to: World-Wide

CD Audio within the game stops playing sometimes.

Detail:
During game play, the background CD audio music will sometime stop.

Answer / Workaround:
This is working as designed. The background sound is designed to play certain music at certain times. Not ALL scenes will have music and some will have music only for part of the scene.

Severity: 3

Press CD during Mercenaries = launches another instance of Mercenaries.

Detail:
While playing Mercenaries, if you press the CD EZ Button, or if you eject and reinsert the CD, it will launch another Mercenaries splash screen. However, if you try to start another mission, you are then informed that another mission is already running.

Answer / Workaround:
If additional splash screen is displayed, simply exit that screen and you will be back at the original mission. The menu on the splash screen will not allow you to start a new mission on top of the existing one.

Triangle affect on explosions when standing close to the explosion.

Detail:
This is very easy to see in the "Mountain" and "Survey" missions. In these missions, your mech does not have to be close to the explosion.
To reproduce on the "Mountain" mission:
1. When this mission starts, you are facing a large mountain. Climb the mountain.
2. At the top you will see a crater. Walk part of the way down the crater.
3. Turn to the left and fire rockets at a point on the crater wall about 30 or so meters away from you. This should reproduce the problem.

Answer / Workaround:
No known workaround for this problem.

Positional sound has weird effect on Mercenaries.

Detail:
Crystal is not able to play more than 8 Positional sounds at one time. Mercenaries positional sound code will play more than 8 3D sounds at one time. The Crystal solution to this issue is to play all sounds above the total number of 8 as 2D sounds.
This causes a weird affect on the sound of the game. One scenario would be the sound of a mech walking on the left-hand side of the screen. The sound of each step of the mech's walking is positional so it will be played out of the left speaker. If Crystal has a 3D resource available when the "step" occurs then the sound associated with that "step" will be played as a 3D sound (you will hear it out of the left speaker). If there is no resource available then the sound will be played as 2D (out of both speakers). As a mech is walking there is the potential that some steps will be played as 3D and some as 2D causing a weird effect as sounds will sometimes come from just the left speaker and sometimes out of both speakers. This issue relates to all positional sounds within Mercenaries. Another way that this problem could be seem is by toggling "group-fire" on and of. While within a mission hit the "\" key. This will toggle "group-fire" on\off. Each time you do this a female voice will inform you of the change. If you continue to do this you will hear the level of her voice change up and down.

Answer / Workaround:
This is an artifact of the fact that Crystal only supports 8 positioned sound sources at the same time. Any beyond this are played 2D. Limitation of the "Clyde" chip. This problem is tied to defect 75268. Crystal needs to put in a fix that will allow Directx 5 to control positional sound. Until that happens these problems will still exist. Update is available via Update Connector.

Some textures appear as white when fog is on.

Detail:
When playing Mercenaries there are some textures in the game which will appear blank or white (as if it is not drawing that area) if you have the games "FOG" setting enabled.

Answer / Workaround:
This is a limitaion of the game. There are no workarounds at this time.

No mouse when Joystick dialog box comes up.

Detail:
This problem will occur only when a user sets up Mercenaries to use a joystick, then removes the joystick from the system and tries to play a mission. The dialog box informs the user that the indicated joystick is no longer available and to hit OK to play without the joystick or CANCEL to exit the mission. OK is highlited. The issue is that there is no mouse cursor on the screen at this point.

Answer / Workaround:
The user can use the keyboard (press ENTER) to select OK and close the message box.

Merc does not throughly remove itself from the system.

Detail:
When uninstalling Merc about 100k worth of files is left behind. If the user saves games and/or customize mechs then this number will grow (but will still remain small). Also, if the user reinstalls Merc without first uninstalling Merc then the Merc folder will not be removed from the Start menu.

Answer / Workaround:
The user can delete the files and the directory manually.

Some buildings do not have texture.

Detail:
During game play some of the buildings have color, however, no texture is displayed.

Answer / Workaround:
This is a limitation of the game. Textures for some buildings were never created. No workarounds available.

Some of the ground textures have visible seams.

Detail:
During game play some of the textures displayed on the ground will have visible 'seams' when moving.

Answer / Workaround:
This is a limitation of the game. No workarounds available.

Merc's CD audio control does not adjust the audio.

Detail:
To reproduce this problem:
1. Start A mission
2. Hit esc to bring up options panel
3. select audio controls
4. Try to adjust the audio. The audio sound should adjust as you slide the control, but it does not.
5. Select to accept the change.
6. Another panel will appear, select accept, you should now be back in the mission. The CD audio level is the same as it was before adjusting the controls.

Answer / Workaround:
Game is not following the SoundVol 32 WSS protocal for changing the volume. To demonstrate this notice that the WSS mixer slider for volume does not follow changes in the Game volume when you use Merc's slider. Also, if you move a WSS slider the volume changes, but the game does not reflect the change on it's slider. The Crystal card is WSS compatible. To adjust the CD Audio volume, use the AudioStation mixer or the Windows Mixer.
