Aptiva - Creative Labs Sound Blaster drivers
Applicable to: United States
Many people who have installed Sound Blaster cards in their computers encounter a large decrease in conventional memory after installing the Creative Labs software. In addition to the CD-ROM drivers, the installation disk will add the following lines to your CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS
Aptiva computers with Sound Blaster 16 cards also have these lines installed in the CONFIG.SYS file.
If your sound card has the Creative Advanced Signal Processor, the following line was also added:
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CSP.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220
The numbers in these examples may vary depending on your sound card settings. Also, if you have a Sound Blaster Pro, the CTSBPRO.SYS file will substitute for the CTSB16.SYS file.
The first two lines are called "low level device drivers," which provide wave playback and recording for certain DOS applications. Two applications that require these drivers are PLAY.EXE and RECORD.EXE, which are in the SB16 directory. Some other programs that were developed with Creative Lab's Sound Blaster Developer Kit also require these drivers.
These two lines take up about 36KB of conventional memory and are NOT required by DOS games or Windows applications. If you use your sound card for Windows programs and DOS games only, you can disable both of these lines without any problems. If you want to disable the two lines, edit your CONFIG.SYS file, and place a "REM" statement in front of them. You may notice an error message "low level driver error" in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, but you can ignore it as it will not affect DOS games or Windows applications.
If your sound card has the Advanced Signal Processor, the third line, which loads CSP.SYS into memory IS required. This program is the resource manager for the Advanced Signal Processor, and it is used by both DOS and Windows programs.
