Quiet Touch Keyboard w/TrackPoint II - Some keyboard functions do not work properly with numeric keypad attached

Applicable to: World-Wide

Problem Description:
Due to the fact that keyboard (Marketing part number 73G8306, FRU part number 84H8566) has had several changes in vendor supplers with some slight design changes with each vendor, the possibility exists that some customers could experience some operational problems. Some known symptoms are:

  1. Alt hot key combinations may not work properly
  2. Shift Print Screen may function abnormally
  3. The double zero function on the keypad doesn't work

There may be other combinations that have not surfaced yet, but the key to resolving the issue is if there is a keypad attached to the keyboard.

Problem Isolation Aids:
If there is a keypad attached, unplug the keypad from the keyboard and have the customer try the operation again. You may want to reboot the PC without the keypad attached to the keyboard to insure that you have cleared all of the failing conditions. If the failing condition is corrected without the keypad attached to the keyboard, some work to the keypad will be required to correct the failing condition.

Solution:
As with the keyboards, the vendors for the keypads have also changed several times and also resulted in some design changes. Regardless of which combination of keypad/keyboard the customer has at any workstation, you will have to correct the failing condition inside of the keypad. To correct the failure, do the following:

  1. Turn the keypad over and remove the two rubber feet from the bottom of the keypad by peeling them off and saving them. (You will have to replace these feet when you are finished).
  2. Remove the two screws that were exposed when the rubber feet were removed.
  3. Lift the circuit card out of the keypad assembly.
  4. There will be a jumper on the top of the circuit card. If the jumper is installed on the two pins, remove the jumper from the two pins and place it on just one pin to save the jumper. If the jumper is not installed on the two pins, you will have to install the jumper on the two pins.
  5. Re-assemble the keypad and re-attach it to the keyboard. This should correct the customer's failing condition.
