Aptiva - Why the telephone splitter cable (Dongle) must be used for Aptiva systems with Mwave modems
Applicable to: World-Wide
You must use the splitter for your Aptiva. Here is why:
The Mwave card looks at pair one (red, green), and connects them to pair two (yellow, black) when on hook. When it goes off hook, the second pair is opened. The Dongle, when plugged into the Aptiva Mwave card, takes pair two from the Mwave card and places it on pair one on the telephone connector.
Thus, when the Modem goes off hook, it disconnects the remainder of the system. However, there are two problems with this design. If you do not use the Dongle, then it does not sense other lines in the home going off hook. Even worse is the case when you have both pair active (two numbers in your home), then both phone lines are tied together when the modem is on hook. This is because the phone wire provided with the Aptiva is four wire, and goes to the home phone jack that is also four wire, and line one and two are tied together in the Mwave card since the modem is not in use.
