TP General - Diskette drive test
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
The floppy drive will not read known good diskettes under any operating system
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 355, 360, 365X/XD, 701, 750, 755, 760, or 765 running any operating system.
SOLUTION:
Do the following to isolate the problem to the controller, drive, or diskette. A blank, write enabled, non-defective HD diskette is required.
FDD-1 represents the built-in diskette drive. FDD-2 represents the external diskette drive attached through the port replicator.
Warning:
Make sure that the diskette does not have more than one label attached to it. Multiple labels can cause damage to the drive or can cause the drive to fail.
Do the following to select the test device:
1. Boot into EZSetup by holding down the F1 key while powering on the computer.
2. At the main menu, click on the Test icon.
3. Go to the advanced diagnostic mode by pressing Ctrl+A from the diagnostic menu.
4. Click on the Tool icon at the top of the screen.
5. Select FDD-1 or FDD-2 which will place a check mark in the box beside the floppy drive. Click OK.
6. It will prompt you to insert a blank, formatted diskette. Do so. It will come back and say Format OK? Click on OK.
Note: The test will perform a read/write test on this diskette. Make sure there is no information on the diskette that you want before proceeding.
7. This will return you to the main test screen. Click on FDD-1 or FDD-2 and let the test run.
8. If the controller test detects an error, FRU code 10 appears. Contact the IBM PC HelpCenter or a local servicer.
9. If the controller test runs without errors, the drive read/write tests start automatically.
10. If the drive test detects an error, FRU code 50 for FDD-1; or 51 for FDD-2 appears. If this occurs, try another known good diskette. If the error reappears, then contact the IBM PC HelpCenter or an authorized servicer to replace the drive.
