TP General - How to enable hot/warm docking

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document provides basic instructions and concerns on how to enable Hot/Warm Docking of ThinkPads under Windows 3.1x and OS/2. There is no need for instructions for Windows 95. This operating system automatically handles Hot/Warm Docking.

Note: This document does not address issues beyond the basic procedures to turning on the Hot/Warm Docking. Issues such as IRQ conflicts, display problems and additional drive letters and such are beyond the scope of this document.

The only docking solutions that provide hot/warm docking are the DOCK 2 (3546-001), and SelectaDock 1 and 2 (3547-001 and 3547-002.) Note: The SelectaDocks are only usable with PCI architecture machines (e.g. all 760Ex and 765 systems.)
The Dock 1 does not support hot and warm docking.

Currently only the following ThinkPads can be Hot/Warm Docked, the exact procedure for enabling differs by machine series.

*ThinkPad 360, 755:
Note: In order to use hot/warm docking ensure that you have installed the latest Utility diskettes for your system. In order to hot/warm dock under OS/2 Warp 3.0 you must download and install 755WDOCK.EXE. OS/2 Warp 4.0 has built in support for hot/warm docking.

Hot/warm docking will not dynamically load drivers for devices in the docking station under DOS and OS/2. When you perform these functions the docking station will for all intents and purposes act as a port replicator.

When you enter Windows a Docking Station ICON should appear in the lower corner of the screen.
1. Right click on this icon to open it.
2. You will then have the option to:
- Enable Hot/Warm Docking
- Disable Hot/Warm Docking

*ThinkPad 701:
Note: Ensure that the ThinkPad is at the BUTUS30 BIOS level, or later.

Hot/Warm docking is automatically handled by the BIOS. It will give you the option Pass Thru or full dock. If you choose Pass Thru the docking station will be seen as a port replicator. If you select full dock, the system will reboot so that the drivers for the dock can be loaded.

*ThinkPad 760, 765:
Note: In order to use hot/warm docking ensure that you have installed the latest Utility diskettes for your system. Hot/warm docking under OS/2 Warp 3.0 is not supported. OS/2 Warp Merlin has built in support for hot/warm docking.

Hot/warm docking will not dynamically load drivers for devices in the docking station under DOS and OS/2. When you perform these functions the docking station will for all intents and purposes act as a port replicator.

Hot/Warm Docking can be enabled through ThinkPad Features. It is supported under Windows 3.1x. and OS/2 Warp 4.0.
1. Double Click on ThinkPad ICON.
2. Double Click on ThinkPad Features.
