IBM PS/2 - Power supply failures (EMEA Only)

Applicable to: EMEA

TEXT:
Certain models in the IBM PS/2 range of systems may experience failure due to the normal aging of a key component in the integrated power supply unit (PSU). The following information is being provided to allow field service and support to reassure end-users, if necessary, that IBM has fully investigated the associated failure mechanism and has concluded that the product fails safe.

AFFECTED SYSTEMS:
Machine types - 8535, 8556, 9556 & 9576
Models - 35, 56 & 76

FAILURE MECHANISM:
The failure mechanism relates to the system unit's integrated 118W auto-ranging PSU.

Failure of a key component within the PSU causes the unit to incorrectly determine that the mains input voltage is in the low range (i.e. from 90 - 165V, as per US-type supplies) and results in the unit switching to 'voltage doubling mode'. This in turn leads to full main voltage (230V) being placed across each of two bulk capacitors ( rated at 200v) which subsequently fail and vent. The venting process is a controlled escape of the vapourised dielectric liquids within the capacitors. The escaping gas picks up dust and debris from within the PSU,escapes through slots in its metal case and then through slots in the metal case of the system unit. The gas typically appears as a small orange/brown 'cloud' emitted from the system unit vents.

Please note that the ejected vapour/cloud, while unpleasant, does not contain harmful amounts of any hazardous substances. In addition, there is no risk to the user from electrical shock, fire or excessive heat. The units fail safe.

RECOMMENDED FIX:
Systems which experience failure due to this condition should have the PSU replaced with FRU P/N 06H3668.
