PS/1-Aptiva - Can I use Microsoft Works for DOS files in Works for Windows?
Applicable to: United States
Yes. You can use Works for DOS files in Works for Windows. However, a disadvantage in using the Works for DOS files is that it may not format correctly when opening the file for the first time in Works for Windows. You may need to re-adjust the formatting after opening the file(s) for the first time.
Example: Works Database
When opening the Works for DOS Database file for the first time in Works for Windows, some of the field names may "overlap" each other in Form View. You can rearrange the field(s) so they are easily readable.
After saving the file in Works for Windows, you can open the same Database file in Works for DOS; however, the field widths will not be the same as they were in Works for Windows!
Another example: Works Word Processing
When you open a Works for DOS file for the first time in Works for Windows, the FONT will display as "Pica" and the choices of FONTS do not match the Pica font you have installed with your printer driver. This is due to the differences in Fonts in Works for DOS and Works for Windows. The file may or may not print in Pica. For best results, highlight and reformat the text using the Font selections contained in your printer driver in Works for Windows.
NOTE: If you open the same file again using Works for DOS after formatting the file in Works for Windows, you will need to reformat the file again in Works for DOS!
