TP General - Models shipped with update connector may have outdated phone list

SYMPTOM:
Users who attempt to locate a local dialup number in areas where area codes have changed may find a number with the old area code. This will cause a problem in that the system will compare the area code they have entered in their Windows 95 telephony properties and then attempt to dial a long distance number for what should be a local call.
CONFIGURATION:
All Thinkpad systems that shipped with Windows 95 or 98 preloaded AND update connector installed. Update Connector is located in one of the Thinkpad program groups on these preloads. For example, on a Thinkpad 600 choose START - PROGRAMS - THINKPAD 600 - IBM UPDATE CONNECTOR
This will only present a problem for users who wish to use the dialer which is part of Update Connector. If they have another Internet account, Update Connector can be started with the option to use that Internet connection to check for updates.
SOLUTION:
A self installing telephone list update is being developed which will install via update connector itself. Until this is available, it is easiest to configure Update Connector to dial the toll free 800 number to check for updates. When the phone list update is available, the local number may then be selected.
To configure the dialer to use the 800 number, after selecting United States for the Country, and the user's state of residence, instead of selecting a local city number, choose, "Local number is not in list". This will set up the toll free number to be dialed.
