DESCRIPTION

NETFINITY EXP10

HIGH-CAPACITY/HIGH-AVAILABILITY:

The IBM Netfinity EXP10 provides a very cost-effective, large capacity, high-availability solution for enterprise customers using rack cabinets. With 10 hot-swap drive bays that support both half-high and slim-high disk drives, each Netfinity EXP10 expansion storage unit can support up to 91GB of high-speed Ultra SCSI data storage when attached to one of the supported PC Server Ultra SCSI adapters. Due to its compact 3U design, up to 14 Netfinity EXP10 units can be housed in a single 42U rack cabinet yielding disk storage of up to 1274GB.

The Netfinity EXP10 is resilient to failure. Dual hot-swap 265W power supplies provide redundant power and can be quickly swapped out if a failure occurs without powering down the server or the Netfinity EXP10. Each power supply contains its own power cord. In addition, two hot-swap cooling units each containing dual fans provide cooling redundancy. If a failure occurs with either of the redundant power supplies or cooling fans, an LED will light to indicate a fault and indicate its location.

The Netfinity EXP10 contains SCA-2, direct-dock, hot-swap drive bays that support replacement of disk drives without powering down the server. This feature, in combination with a PC ServeRAID or ServeRAID II adapter, provides fault-tolerant data storage RAID levels 1 or 5 solutions. The best way to avoid a problem is to detect it before it occurs and replace the device. All Netfinity EXP10 drive options contain the S.M.A.R.T. feature that, when used in conjunction with Netfinity Manager, can alert the system administrator of an impending disk drive failure up to 24 hours before it occurs. This allows the failing unit to be replaced before it can be a cause of degraded server performance.

The Netfinity EXP10 contains an electronics board that interfaces between the external SCSI cables and hot-swap backplane. This board splits the backplane into two SCSI buses to support duplexing solutions. Twin-tailing is used with clustering software and allows two servers to be attached to a single Netfinity EXP10 for business-critical solutions. The EXP10 can support two servers sharing the same SCSI channel or two servers configured to use both SCSI buses independently. Clustering provides a very high degree of fault tolerance and high availability, because the network can continue to operate even if one of the servers goes off-line as the remaining server can then take over using the common data storage of the EXP10. Refer to the PLANNING INFORMATION section of this announcement for more information on configuring the Netfinity XP10.

EASE-OF-USE/INSTALLATION:

The Netfinity EXP10 is designed for installation into an industry standard 19-inch rack cabinet meeting EIA-310-D standards. Refer to the HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS section of this announcement for more information on rack requirements. Also, more information regarding the benefits of the IBM Netfinity Rack can be found in Hardware Announcement 197-xxx,(RFA 29081) dated September 23, 1997. The Netfinity EXP10 storage unit is supported as a rack drawer. It ships with a rack installation kit that provides the necessary hardware to mount the storage unit in the rack.

The Netfinity EXP10 contains 10 conveniently located hot-swap drive bays ready to accept the IBM Netfinity EXP10 disk drive options. These drive options are pre-mounted onto the hot-swap trays so that installation is quick and simple. The hot-swap backplane contains drive LEDs that indicate SCSI drive activity, a fault condition on the drive, or that a drive is in a rebuilding state. Hot-swap power supplies and cooling fan units are easily accessible from the rear of the unit and have camming levers to aid in removal. An external SCSI terminator and a .4 meter cable are provided to allow flexibility in configuration of the storage unit.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
___________________

The Netfinity EXP10 is positioned above the PC Server 3519 Rack Storage Expansion Enclosure due to its greater capacity for data storage and its enhanced high-availability features and support of Wide Ultra SCSI speeds. In addition, the compact 3U design of the Netfinity EXP10 allows greater amounts of data storage to be contained in a single 42U industry standard rack unit. The Netfinity EXP10 is designed to handle enterprise, business-critical applications that require a high degree of data storage scalability with the resiliency of fault-tolerant, redundant features to protect and maintain access to the data.

PLANNING INFORMATION

CABLE ORDERS REQUIRED: Yes

One external or two SCSI cables are required to attach the Netfinity EXP10 to the host server adapter depending upon the configuration. Refer to the compatibility section of this announcement for the appropriate cable needed for the host adapter.

CONFIGURATIONS: Netfinity EXP10 contains an electronics board that interfaces between the external SCSI cables and the hot-swap backplane. There are four 68-pin standard SCSI connectors wired to the electronics board. These connectors allow multiple configurations for various conventional and clustering configurations.

CONFIGURING TWO SCSI BUSES IN THE NETFINITY EXP10:

When configuring a Netfinity EXP10 with both buses independent of each other, one external SCSI cable is attached from the SCSI adapter to a SCSI bus 1 IN connector on the unit. A second external SCSI cable is attached from another SCSI adapter connector in the same server to SCSI bus 2 IN connector in the unit. The SCSI bus 1 OUT and the SCSI bus 2 OUT connectors must have an external SCSI terminator attached. The Netfinity EXP10 ships with one terminator, so another terminator (PN 32G3918) must be ordered to support this configuration.

This configuration provides a high-availability solution for duplexing or mirroring up to five disk drives by using a PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter.

CONFIGURING ONE BUS IN THE NETFINITY EXP10:

To configure a Netfinity EXP10 as a single 10 drive SCSI channel, one external SCSI cable is attached from the SCSI adapter to the SCSI bus 1 IN connector in the unit. The .4 meter internal cable provided in the ship group is connected to the SCSI bus 1 OUT and the SCSI bus 2 IN connectors of the unit. The external terminator is then installed on the SCSI bus 2 OUT.

This configuration would generally be used with a RAID adapter so the stored data could be protected in the event of a drive failure.

CLUSTERING TWO SCSI BUSES IN THE NETFINITY EXP10:

To configure both buses independently for clustering, one external SCSI cable is attached between a SCSI adapter in one server to SCSI bus 1 IN on the unit. A second external SCSI cable is attached from a second SCSI controller in a second server to the SCSI bus 1 OUT in the EXP10. To configure the second SCSI bus for clustering repeat the above steps for the SCSI bus 2 connectors.

This configuration provides a high level of resiliency to failure in that if one server goes off line, the other server can continue to function.

CLUSTERING ONE SCSI BUS IN THE NETFINITY EXP10:

To configure the Netfinity EXP10 as a cluster of 10 drives on a single SCSI bus, an external SCSI cable is connected between the SCSI adapter of one server and the SCSI bus 1 IN connector of the unit. A second external SCSI cable is attached from a second SCSI adapter in a second server to the SCSI bus 2 OUT in the unit. The .4 meter cable is then connected to the SCSI bus 1 OUT and SCSI bus 2 IN connectors of the unit.

This configuration shares the data storage of the EXP10 between two clustered servers and should be used with a SCSI RAID adapter to ensure the data is protected.

PRODUCT NAME

IBM Netfinity EXP10 4.51GB and 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 Hard Disk Drive, and the IBM Netfinity EXP10 4.51GB 10K Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 Hard Disk Drive

IN BRIEF - PRODUCT SPECIFIC

The Netfinity EXP10 4.51GB and 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 Hard Disk Drive options are high-performance, (7200 rpm) hot-swap disk drives. The Netfinity EXP10 4.51GB 10K Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 Hard Disk Drive is a very high-performance (10,000 rpm) hot-swap disk drive. These technologically advanced disk drives have a maximum burst transfer rate of up to 40MB/s and are designed specifically for the Netfinity EXP10. These disk drives feature a high degree of reliability through advanced design using enhanced electronics integration, Magneto-Resistive (MR) heads, and no-ID sector formatting. These features yield platter densities to 1GB per 3.5-inch platter that reduce internal components and increase reliability.

The drives are mounted on a hot-swap drive carrier so they are easily and quickly installed in a Netfinity EXP10. They also feature Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting (S.M.A.R.T.) that, with NetFinity Manager, can alert the user up to 24 hours before a drive failure occurs. This feature is beneficial even in RAID-protected environments, because it allows the drive to be replaced before failure, thus eliminating a source of degraded server performance when rebuilding data from a defunct drive.
