CrossBrand - Flash BIOS corruption/dead system

Symptom:
Dead system after applying flash BIOS update.

Problem Isolation Aids:
It is possible to install flash BIOS for one machine type on a different machine type. For example, it is possible to install PC300 i486 flash BIOS onto a PC300 Pentium system and vice versa or install PC700 flash BIOS onto a VP-p system. Once the incorrect flash BIOS is installed and the machine is re-booted, the system board will no longer function. There is no field procedure to reinstall the correct flash. The system board must be replaced.

Fix:
If the flash diskette is not labeled, the most reliable method to determine what system it applies to is to view view the diskette volume label. The first 2 digits of the volume label define the code's applicable machine type.

The following table can be used to decode the flash code titles:-

AABCDDE.xxx
AA = Machine type or product code.
B = Release type.
C = Reserved.
DD = Level of Code.
E = Build stage.
xxx = File ship format .

PRODUCT CODE - MACHINE TYPE:
L6 = All models of 6382/S & 6387/T and all models of 6384/D except P-60.
L8 = 6381/SI 486SX.
L9 = 6381/SI 486DX.

Note:
L8 and L9 are provided on the same diskette. The flash install program will install the appropriate code for the system.

LA = 6384/D P-60 PENTIUM.
LD = VP-p; 6472/P, 6482/P, 6484/P, 6492/P, 6494/P.
LE = PC300 i486; 6571, 6573, 6581, 6583.
LP = PC300 Pentium; 6576, 6586
N1 = PC300 Pentium; 6575, 6585.
N1 = PC700 PCI/ISA; 6875, 6885.
N2 = PC700 PCI/MC; All models of 6876 and 6886.

RELEASE TYPE (B)
B = OEM flash/BIOS/POST update diskette.
E = EPROM/early flash BIOS update diskette.
J = flash/POST/BIOS update diskette.
K = flash/POST/BIOS update code.

LEVEL OF BUILD (DD)
Includes all changes from previous levels.

BUILD STAGE (E)
A = official build.

FILE SHIP FORMAT (xxx)
IMG = diskett image format.
DTA = diskette image EMT format.
DSK = Diskette LOADDSKF / LOADDISK format.
