TP General - Drive letter assignment order changes when adding a second hard drive
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
After installing a secondary hard drive, the drive letter assignment order is changed after the addition of the new hard drive. The new hard drive is assigned a letter that is inserted into the existing disk drive order rather than added to the end of the drive order. For example, the current hard drive installed in the ThinkPad has two partitions, C and D. After installing the secondary hard drive, it gets assigned drive letter D, causing your old D drive to be reassigned to E.
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad that is using a secondary hard drive, either installed in the UltraBay of the ThinkPad 760, 765, or 770 series using the second hard drive adapter, the UltraslimBay HDD adapter of the ThinkPad 600 or 600E, or in the SelectaDock Docking Stations.
SOLUTION:
This will occur when the secondary hard drive being installed has a primary partition setup on the drive. In order for the second hard drive to be assigned drive letters after the existing partitions, the second hard drive must be partitioned as an extended partition using the FDISK command.
