Aptiva - Maintenance of a SuperStor compressed drive

Applicable to: United States

As with other computer systems, a regular schedule of disk drive maintenance should be devised to help ensure the integrity and readiness of the system. Typical tasks are checking the drives for logic errors, backing up new and changed files periodically, and running an anti-virus program, such as IBM AntiVirus, on the drive to prevent loss or damage to the data files on the system.

The presence of a SuperStor compressed drive on the system will not affect any backup or anti-virus program. Operations of these programs will be the same as if the drive was uncompressed. The maintenance functions for the drive, however, are slightly different than for uncompressed drives, and they are reviewed here to help you understand what to do.

To begin the maintenance checks on the drive, exit Windows or DOSSHELL, and enter the command SSUTIL at the DOS prompt. A screen will appear with a menu and a list of compressed drives. Select the Analysis option from the menu, then select Check Disk. The program will then scan the drive to determine if any errors are present. If any are detected, you can then select the Repair Disk function to fix file structure errors or the Scan Disk function to fix data storage errors.

In the main menu of SSUTIL, you can select the Disk Tuneup option and then select the FRAGMENTS option from the next submenu. This program will analyze the drive to determine the amount of fragmentation it has and then recommend if another disk tuneup utility should be run. Using that recommendation, your drive will be optimized for better performance.

A general suggestion for how often to run SSUTIL for analysis and disk tuneup is once a week for the first few weeks, and then once every two weeks thereafter. If possible, try not to delay the running of SSUTIL for more than a month since the last time the program was run. This will help to ensure that your data files are safe and that the compressed drive is functioning properly.
