Aptiva - Using True Type Fonts

Applicable to: United States

Many users don't understand the consequences of using TrueType fonts in Windows. The use of TrueType fonts will cause the average printer to slow down quite a bit when printing occurs. The slowness of printing is because TrueType fonts are actually graphics where each of the characters is printed by using the dot makeup of the character in a graphical mode. In essence, you are printing a "picture" of the character. On some printers, this printing may require more than one pass of the print head to print the "graphical" character. This slows down the printing, in addition to using more ribbon to do the average printing.

Some people are solving this problem in two different ways:

1. Turn off TrueType fonts by opening the Control Panel icon, then the Fonts icon. Then click on the TrueType button and select Enable TrueType Fonts to remove the X in the box.

2. Select the Generic Text Printer to do the printing. Open the Control Panel, then the Printers icon. Highlight the Generic/Text Only Printer, and click on Set As Default Printer.

NOTE: Both of these procedures will solve the problem of printing slowly, BUT the next time you go into one of your Windows programs, like MS Works for Windows, you will not be able to see or use all of the True Type fonts that were listed before. Since you have disabled the TrueType fonts with either of the above two procedures, Windows can't use the True Type fonts. This is causing some of you to post messages in the Technical Support Forums asking "what happened to all my fonts?".

So you have a choice:

1. Using True Type fonts, you can print documents in the True Type graphical text, BUT slowly and using more ribbon;

2. Using the Generic Text Printer driver, you can print everything fast, with less ribbon usage, BUT without all of the fancy fonts;

3. Or, you can remember to change between the Generic printer driver and the True Type fonts, as long as you REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE SETTINGS!
