TP General - General troubleshooting tips for missing CD-ROM drive in Windows 95

SYMPTOM:
Under Windows 95 the CDROM drive should be auto-detected. There is no need to specifically install any drivers from diskette factory or elsewhere to have the CDROM appear in My Computer. However, if you are missing the CDROM drive icon, here are some possible solutions:
SOLUTION:
1.) Please verify that the CDROM is in the machine and seated correctly. Also try running the CDROM hardware test in Easy Setup and verify that it is seeing the drive correctly.
2.) The usual problem is that the DOS 16-bit drivers have been installed. These may stop the CDROM from working in Windows 95. The drivers are usually called IBMTPCD in the CONFIG.SYS and MSCDEX in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. These need to be removed for Windows 95 to see the CD-ROM again. Try renaming both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. If this solves the problem after a reboot then it is a process of deduction to determine which driver is causing the problem.
3.) Go to Control Panel, Open the SYSTEM icon, and check the "Performance tab" for DOS compatibility mode. If it says anything about master boot record being modified, you most likely have a virus installed on your computer.
4.) Try booting the system to MSDOS mode, and load the real-mode CDROM drivers in the CONFIG.SYS and autoexec.bat
These drivers will vary depending on you type of ThinkPad.
