TP 600E,770X - "No valid drive/disc found!" error when running DVDExpress

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
Mediamatics DVDExpress player displays the error "No valid drive/disc found!".

Configuration:
ThinkPad 770X or 600E running Windows 95 or 98.

Solution:
The error message may appear with Mediamatics DVDExpress on Microsoft Windows 95/98 under the following conditions:

  1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Performance -> Graphics. Check that the Graphics Hardware Acceleration is set to "Most Accelerator functions" or "All Accelerator functions" (Full).
  2. A DVD title is left in the ThinkPad DVD drive when the system boots up, or the system is restarted. Eject the DVD title and reinsert it to play correctly. This problem does not occur when there is a free IRQ resource .
  3. If DirectX 5 is installed on the ThinkPad, run the program c:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup\Dxtool.exe and ensure that the option Use DirectDraw Hardware Acceleration is enabled.
  4. The problem is not fixed by step (1) and there is a missing drive in the drive assignments, e.g.,

C: drive -> Hard Disk Drive
D: drive -> No drive assigned
E: drive -> DVD drive
To resolve this issue, you need to assign a consecutive drive letter to the DVD drive. (see below)
C: drive -> Hard Disk Drive
D: drive -> DVD drive

How to change your DVD drive letter from E to D
  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Select your actual DVD drive name.
  3. Open its 'Properties'.
  4. Select 'Settings' tab.
  5. Choose 'Start drive letter' D: in 'Reserved drive letters'.
  6. Select 'OK', and Restart your computer.
