PS/1 - Adding a Second Hard Drive

Applicable to: United States

The IBM PS/1 system uses a standard IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) disk controller (this is the most common disk controller out there). The IDE controller in your system is capable of controlling a second fixed disk (in addition to the one that it came with). Any fixed disk you add will need to be 100% CAM (common access method) and have no more than 1024 CYLINDERS.

Some hard drive manufacturers have started manufacturing hard drives with more than 1024 cylinders. The PS/1 computer is not designed to support these drives. Check with the dealer to make sure the drive you are purchasing has 1024 or less CYLINDERS.

You will need a "Y" cable to connect the 2 fixed disks to the one hard drive controller. The "Y" cable usually comes with the new hard drive. If it does not it can be purchased at most computer stores.

The PS/1 computer's original hard drive comes from the factory configured as the master drive (bootable drive). You will need to change the jumper settings on the new drive so it will be configured as the slave drive (nonbootable). A listing of the new drives jumper settings should be in its documentation. If you cannot find any information on the jumper settings, look for the manufacturer's technical support phone number. Give them a call, they should be happy to help.

For instructions on physically installing the new drive consult the "Adding Options to Your PS/1" booklet that came with your computer. After the installation process power up the system while holding down both mouse buttons until you hear a system beep. At that point your machine should continue to boot up as normal. Holding down the mouse buttons will make the system aware of the newly installed hardware. You will need to do FDISK before the drive will become functional. After you do FDISK the system will tell you what the new drive letter will be. More than likely it will be "D". The CD-ROM if you have one will drop back a letter.

1. Exit Windows.

2. Get to a DOS prompt.

3. Type FDISK and press Enter.

4. Select option 5 to change the current disk.

5. Select Option 1.

6. Select #2 extended DOS partition.

7. Make the entire drive the partition.

8. Exit FDISK.

9. At the C: prompt, type FORMAT D: or the letter assigned after running FDISK and press Enter.

This will format the new drive. Once that is done, you can use it like the C drive.

***NOTE: If adding a Harddrive as a primary or secondary, and it is over 528mb, the Bios will not see the whole drive. Disk Management Software must be used to work around this limitation. Any larger harddrive you buy, will come with the Disk Management Software. If it is not included, please contact the manufacturer of the Harddrive for the most up to date version of the Disk Manager. Additionally, most PS/1's have a limitation with using Disk Manager, as it relates to installing Harddrives. The limitation is 2 gigabytes.
