TP 600,770/ED - ACP modem test fails in EZSetup

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
When testing the ACP modem in EZSetup, the diagnostics fails reporting an error with the modem.

CONFIGURATION:
Any Thinkpad 600/770 with an internal ACP modem and ROM level:

ROM Image

BIOS P/N

BIOS Date

TP 600

IBET22WW

97H4060

4/02/98

TP 770/ED

IDET20WW

97H4080

4/21/98

This information can be check by either of the following two methods:
1. Enter Easy-Setup
o The first screen shows the BIOS p/n and date

2. Open the Thinkpad Configuration Utility
o Go to the Help menu and select System Information
o The ROM image, BIOS p/n, and BIOS date are all listed in this window

SOLUTION:
If the ROM level is at those affected levels, guide the customer to go through the following steps:
1. If options / docking are installed with system, ask customer to remove them.
2. Initialize CMOS to return the IRQ to default.
3. Run DSP diagnostics in Easy-Setup.

If there is still a test failure, a hardware problem is suspected. Have the system serviced.

If there is NOT a test failure, the hardware is assumed be okay, then try to resolve any software problems such as IRQ conflicts.

The DSP diagnostic program in later ROM levels doesn't have this problem (false error when IRQs are shared) and you may judge a hardware problem exists or not by simply running the test with any IRQ setting.
