IBM 3153 ASCII Terminal Display - Attaching peripheral input devices

The 3153 is commonly used with data collection devices, such as:
- Magnetic Stripe Readers (Credit Card)
- Barcode Readers
- Barcode Wands

Barcode/Magnetic Stripe Readers:
Using 3153 Keyboard Port:
There are many companies that offer data collection devices that attach between the 3153 keyboard and the 3153 video element which act like keyboard input. IBM does not test, endorse or support this configuration/attachment.

Using 3153 Auxiliary Port:
The 3153 Auxiliary Port, like the 3153 is bi-directional. The data collection device would attach the the 3153 Auxiliary Port.

The 3153, in IBM 3151 mode, supports Inbound (3153 to host) Pass-Through Mode. All the data received by the 3153 Auxiliary Port is sent to the host. The data that is sent to the host includes the 3151 emulation Passthrough Header DLE DC2 and 3151 emulation Passthrough Trailer DLE DC4. The would received the following data: x'20' x'22' data1 data2 data3 . . . x'20' x'24'

The 3153, in IBM 3151 mode, must have Inbound Pass-Through Mode enabled. The 3153 defaults Inbound Pass-Through Mode enabled. The 3153 setup parameter 'Host/Printer'='EIA/AUX'.

Mouse/Scanner:
3153 does not support attachment of mouse or a scanner.
