If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. Boot the machine and press Ctrl A when prompted to enter SCSI Select. Select to Configure the host adapter and restore defaults (Extended BIOS Translation should be enabled). Low level format the drive under SCSI disk utilities.

2. Boot from the NT Diskettes. Allowing autodetection of the mass storage device for the standard 7870 based (2940W) adapter is acceptable for this server.

3. Create an active partition on the boot SCSI drive between 2 and 4GB.

4. Do not use internal NT drivers for your Network Interface Card (NIC) or SCSI devices added after the install. Use OEM supplied or downloaded drivers for this purpose. Service Pack 3 is mandatory. See Appendix A for installation instructions. Create an Emergency Repair disk during the installation.

See notes and warnings in the detailed instructions concerning NT install and RAID issues.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
Follow the instructions below in the order presented:

4.1 Setting up the BIOS
Note: Follow the on screen directions on the following disk operations:

1. Boot to the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 1.0) and flash the system to revision 29A or later.

2. Press F1 to enter CMOS, then load defaults from the menu. Save and exit.

4.2 Running the Micro Channel Reference Disk
Note: If no Micro Channel cards are installed, there is no need to run the Reference Disk. However if a Micro Channel card is added, a 00165 configuration error will occur on boot and the system will go into the CMOS configuration menu.

1. CMOS will redisplay the 00165 error. Select to continue. Another error occurs, continue again. You are now at the main CMOS menu. Select Micro Channel Configuration. CMOS now prompts for the Reference Disk (place it in the floppy drive). The system will now reboot to the Reference Disk.

2. Error 00165 reoccurs. Select Y to run automatic configuration when prompted. If the Reference Disk does not have an Adapter Description File (ADF) file for your hardware, it will prompt for the option disk. When auto configuration is complete, the Reference disk menu can be used to inspect the settings. Verify your NIC cards are set to the proper speed if they are adjustable in the Reference Disk.

4.3 Setting up the Adaptec SCSI Subsystem
Note: For open bay models or any SCSI chain setup issues, download Faxback document # 33050 (800-426-3395 in the US).

1. Boot the server and press Ctrl A when prompted on the screen to enter SCSI Select.

2. Select Configure/View Host Adapter Settings.

3. Press F6 to restore defaults. Select yes to reset all options to default. Open SCSI device configuration, on the lines which say Send Start Unit Command set all IDs for active hard disks to yes.

4. Press Esc twice. Choose yes to save any changes which are made.

5. Select SCSI Disk Utilities (A SCSI bus scan should occur).

6. For each hard drive that appears in the list perform the following:
a. Highlight the drive.
b. Select Format Disk. (Note: A status bar does not appear. Allow to run until complete.)

4.4. Installing the NOS
Note: There is a Microsoft TechNet issue with some Windows NT installs reporting Operating System Not Found or similar error message after rebooting the first time during the install. This is solved by creating new boot disks by running WINNT /OX from the i386 directory of the CD ROM on a DOS or Win 95 machine, or running WINNT32 /OX from the same directory on an NT machine to create new boot disks. Use these disks for the installation. The shrink-wrapped disks will work without problems intermittently (perhaps 2 out of 6 tries). Refer to MS Technet for details.

1. Boot from the NT boot diskettes and follow the directions. Allow NT to autodetect the mass storage device for this server type (this assumes the SCSI controller included with the machine is the boot controller).

2. Follow the on screen directions. When a screen appears with hardware information (Computer, Keyboard, etc.) select Above list matches my computer. Continue following the on screen directions.

3. When a screen appears showing unpartitioned space on hard drives, ensure the boot SCSI device freespace is highlighted and press C. Enter a partition size between 2 and 4GB. The C drive should now read New (unformatted).

4. When asked for the target for the NT installation, highlight the C partition and press Enter. Allow setup to format the partition (NTFS recommended).

5. Skip exhaustive examination of the drives by pressing Esc. Partitions will now be checked.

6. Follow the on screen directions to complete the file copy operation and allow the machine to reboot.

7. The machine should now boot to the graphical portion of the NT install. The installation should now follow the on screen instructions depending on whatever hardware you have installed.

Note: Use only downloaded drivers or those supplied with NIC cards. This also goes for SCSI devices added after install.

Note: Create an Emergency Repair Disk when prompted.

*When NT is installed, Service Pack 3 is mandatory. Perform the following to install it:

Appendix A: Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
Note: You will need about 75MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.

1. Insert the ServerGuide FixPak CD that contains Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 into the CD-ROM drive, or download the Service Pack onto your hard disk drive (be sure to select the 128-bit version if you are using the U.S./Canadian version of Windows NT).

2. Run the file from a command prompt, or from an Explore window; locate NT4SP3_I.EXE on the CD.

3. Press Enter on the NT4SP3_I.EXE Service Pack Setup window to begin the installation.

4. Agree to the license and press Enter.

5. Select to create or not to create an Uninstall directory; then, press Enter twice to continue. (Uninstall directory is recommended.)

6. The Service Pack is then copied to your system.

7. If any message appears asking if you want to replace a newer or OEM file, select No to All.

8. After the installation is complete, click OK or press Enter to restart (reboot) the server.
