1.0 What you will need
Licensed copy of SCO OpenServer Enterprise System, v5.0.4.

Supported hard disk drives. Refer to http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/ for a list of supported options and part numbers for your server.

A supported adapter identified on the IBM Compatibility Web site. Refer to http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat for a list of supported options and part numbers for your server.

PC Server 704 Configuration Utility Diskette, v3.61 (part number 4306979) or later

PC Server 704 BIOS Flash Update Diskette, v1.00.16 (part number 01K7588) or later

One blank diskette to create an Emergency Repair Diskette (label it, Emergency Repair Diskette).

If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. Run the System Configuration Utility Diskette to set up the server and ensure that the MP Spec is set to 1.4.

2. Reset the Adaptec controllers to default settings and low-level-format all hard disk drives.

3. Insert the SCO OpenServer Boot Disk into the diskette drive and turn on the server.

4. At the startup (boot) prompt, press Enter. Follow the window instructions that will guide you through the installation and note the following.

At the Identifying the installation media device window, make sure that SCSI CD-ROM is highlighted as the media device to be used (use the Spacebar for options).

At the Configuring optional software window, select Deferred for the Network card (using the Spacebar for choices). The Network configuration manager or netconfig can be run after the installation is complete to configure any installed network adapters and protocols. Be sure to check the SCO bulletin board system (BBS) or Web site for the latest Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers and/or release supplements that might be required (that is, release supplement 504c).

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
1. The release supplement for SCO OpenServer, v5.0.4 is located on the SCO ftp/BBS (ftp.sco.com, anonymous ftp) in the /Supplements/rs504c subdirectory. Apply this supplement after the installation of SCO OpenServer, v5.0.4.

The /Supplements/rs504c subdirectory contains the following files:

- VOL.000.000, VOL.001.000, VOL.002.000, VOL.003.000 --- The supplement binaries.
Refer to rs504c.doc.english for details.

Note: These file names must be in upper case to install!

- rs504c.fixlist --- Text file containing a description of the fixes/patches.

- rs504c.doc.english --- Text file containing complete description of the release supplement, including
instructions for installing or removing it. This document is also available in French and German.

4.1 Setting up the BIOS
Note: Follow the on-screen directions with the following disk operations:

Start (boot) using the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 1.0) and update (flash) the system to revision 16.

4.2 Setting up the hardware
Running the System Configuration Utility (SCU) Diskette on the 704 Server:

1. Start (boot) using the SCU Diskette.

2. Select Step 1, Execute AMI SCU; then, press Enter at the logo screen.

3. Select Step 3, Change configuration settings.

4. Select System board. Under MP Spec version set MP Spec v1.4.

5. Press Esc to return to the Main Menu. Select Step 4, Save configuration.

6. When the save is complete, Select Step 6, Exit. Press Enter at the next screen.

4.3 Setting up the Adaptec SCSI subsystem
Note: For open bay models or any SCSI chain setup issues, download Faxback document 33050 from 800-426-3395.

1. Start (boot) the server and press Ctrl A, when prompted on the screen, to enter SCSISelect.

2. Select Configure/View host adapter settings.

3. Press F6 to restore defaults. Select Yes to reset all options to default. Open SCSI device configuration. On the lines which say Send start unit command, set all IDs for active hard disks to Yes.

4. Press Esc twice. Choose Yes to save any changes that were made.

5. Select SCSI disk utilities (a SCSI bus scan should occur).

6. For each hard disk drive that appears in the list, perform the following:
a. Highlight the drive.
b. Select Format disk. (Note: A status bar does not appear. Allow the format to run until complete.)

4.4 Installing SCO OpenServer v5.0.4
1. Insert the SCO OpenServer Boot Disk into the diskette drive and turn on the server.

2. At the startup (boot) prompt, press Enter. Follow the window instructions that will guide you through the installation and note the following.

Defaults may be accepted, unless specified otherwise.

At the Identifying the installation media device window, make sure that SCSI CD-ROM is highlighted as the media device to be used (use the Spacebar for options).

Use the default U.S. English for all U.S. keyboard/language environments.

At the Configuring the basic system window, type the System/Domain Names, Security Profile, and Time Zones as appropriate for your site. Consult your local system administrator for details.

At the Configuring optional software window, select Deferred for the Network Card (using the Spacebar for choices). The Network Configuration Manager or netconfig can be run after the installation is complete to configure any installed network adapters and protocols. Be sure to check the SCO bulletin board system (BBS) or Web site for the latest Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers and/or release supplements that might be required (that is, release supplement 504c).

For Mouse, select Low resolution keyboard mouse (two-button mouse) or High resolution keyboard mouse (three-button mouse) depending on the type of mouse installed.

All other installation components (choosing software, setting up your startup hard disk drive/file systems, root passwords, and so on) are dependent upon the specifications of your site. Consult your local system administrator for details.

3. After the installation is complete, remove any diskettes or other media; then, press Enter to restart the server.

4. You will receive a Virus Warning after you restart the server; this is normal. Select Change is expected.

5. At the startup (boot) prompt, press Enter.
