Aptiva - How to test CD-ROM drive ability to read data CDs

For Mxx Series Preloaded with OS/2 & Windows 3.1:
Boot computer with Recovery diskette number one in Drive A (floppy diskette drive). When instructed, remove diskette one, insert Recovery diskette two, and press "Enter". At menu, press "6" and press "Enter" to go to A:\> prompt. Insert Aptiva Recovery CD-ROM or other data CD-ROM into CD drive. Wait until CD light goes out. At A:\> prompt, type d: and press "Enter". At the D:\> prompt, type "dir" and press "Enter". If a list of files is shown on screen, the CD-ROM drive is reading data CD discs. Remove the floppy diskette and CD-ROM and restart the system.

For Mxx and Axx Series with Windows 95:
Boot computer with Aptiva Recovery diskette in Drive A. At menu, press 'n' for No. Insert Aptiva Recovery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Wait until the light on the CD-ROM drive goes out. At A:\> prompt, type "d:" and press "Enter". (On 2144-A45 & 2168-A44 systems, type "g:" and then you will have a g:\ prompt as opposed to a d:\ prompt). At D:\> prompt, type "dir" and press "Enter". If a list of files is shown on screen, the CD-ROM drive is reading data CD discs. Remove the floppy diskette and CD-ROM and restart the system.

For Cxx and Sxx and later Series:
Boot computer with Aptiva Diagnostics and Utilities CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. At the menu, type the number "0" (zero) and this will bring you to an A:\> prompt. (The "0" is not listed as an option; it is a hidden feature) At the A:\> prompt, type "dir" and press "Enter". If a list of files is shown on screen, the CD-ROM drive is reading data CD discs CD-ROM Disc should be removed and system restarted.
