Aptiva - How to install Warp on a drive other than C

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
How to install Aptiva Warp on a drive other than C:

Warning:
Long Append, not aimed at TMUs For those that are interested, I finally figured out how to get the Aptiva version of Warp installed on a logical drive. This only the first step toward having a set up where you can use Boot Manager to select between DOS/Windows and Warp, since you will still need the service CD to get the Mwave support installed.

Also, while the support for DOS and Windows games mode is present, I have not figured out how to get it to work from a logical partition. (Appends in the OS2WARP forum indicate that it is not designed to work from a logical partition, so this is probably a permanent restriction.)

As long as you have only one C: drive, you can set aside space for a separate Rapid Resume partition. PS1PPART is needed to set up the RR partition. Alternatively, you can put an object in the Startup folder on your new partition that runs the same command file as is in the Startup folder of the preload. (That command file calls ps1pfile, which ensures that the - PS1SAVE.DAT file was already created when booted to DOS and then enables Rapid Resume.)

1. Make the recovery diskettes. (Test them too, to be sure you can get to the recovery menu.)
2. Get all partitions defined as you intend them to be when you are done. (This is to avoid having the CD-ROM letter from changing as the number of partitions changes.) It may be possible to avoid this step by changing the SET SOURCEPATH line in the Disk 1 config.sys at appropriate times.
3. If you do not have partition magic (and therefore had to fdisk and format to get your partitions in order) restore the preload to drive C: If you do not restore the preload, you probably won't be happy with the results of this procedure, since many Aptiva features (see above) will not be available from the Warp you install on a logical drive.
4. Create a Warp bootable diskette. (I used sysinstx.com from a Warp with WinOS/2 shrink wrap diskette. If you cannot find a copy of sysinstx around, you should be able to create an extra Recovery diskette 1 and then erase all files except OS2BOOT.)
5. Copy all files from x:\OS2IMAGE\DISK_0 to the diskette created in the previous step. (where x: is the CD drive letter)
6. Use the LABEL command to name this diskette "DISK 0" (without the quotes)
7. Copy all files from x:\OS2IMAGE\DISK_1 to another blank, formatted diskette.
8. Use the LABEL command to name this diskette "DISK 1" (without the quotes)
9. Add these lines to the bottom of Config.sys on DISK 1 (If your CD-ROM is not drive g:, change the fourth line as needed)

device=os2cdrom.dmd /q
basedev=ibmidecd.flt
ifs=cdfs.ifs /q
set sourcepath=g:\os2image
10. Erase the file BUNDLE from DISK 1
11. Copy os2cdrom.dmd, ibmidecd.flt and cdfs.ifs from the official recovery diskette #2 to your new DISK 1.
12. Shutdown, boot from the new DISK 0, proceed as normal for Warp Installation.
13. You may get error messages related to the CD-ROM drive during the boot between phase 1 and phase two. For me, these did not affect the install.
14. Select VGA for the display. I don't know what would happen if you were to select the Trident 8900 support that is selected by default. I had no trouble installing the TX12-28 driver after installation was done.

If you are familiar with ftp and loaddskf, and would like to avoid the hassle of steps 4 to 11, I have made images of DISK 0 and DISK 1 available for anonymous ftp from mrdavepc.fishkill.ibm.com (9.50.83.147 for the name server impaired) in the j:\anonymous\pub directory. The file names are WarpApt0.DSK and WarpApt1.DSK.
